In my technical area, we supported diverse business units and applications/technology, so work was never boring. Challenging and refreshing to work on different types of technologies and with numerous departments. Benefits were good...pension included.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Abbott Labs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The salary and benefits are very good. And there are some wonderful people who work there.

    Cons

The company seems to struggle with direction. When you continually make decisions based on making yourself look good in the moment, then it's hard to have a solid long term path.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what makes the company great and pursue that. Don't let temporary setbacks derail you from the overall plan.

I have been working at Abbott Labs (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is a great place to gain a little experience. I recommend it for a summer job in between or fresh out of college. They have a really good cafeteria with homemade type dishes. It is great in case you forget your lunch like I did all the time. They even have chicken wings as part of breakfast on Fridays, but they also have a variety of healthy choices too. They are nice people, who love to see results. They are very understanding and gave time off for very important obligations as long as you ask beforehand.

    Cons

I felt a disconnect with management sometimes. They were very unpredictable. Some people just received calls from their recruiter all of a sudden saying the contract is over. They give no heads up. As soon as they are done using your help, you could be gone. It can be stressful to worry week to week about whether you might have a job or not.

It is hard to network at times because people seem to be in their little groups. Also, when I asked management for assistance with connecting with people for full time positions, they seemed to ignore it and say to use the job board like everyone else. They did not seem like they wanted to help.

    Advice to Management

Please give more of a heads up because we depend on these jobs too. While a lot of contractor reviews say they felt excluded, I had the opposite experience and felt like part of the team and I appreciate that. Lastly, as young professionals, we need to network, so please at least try to help because the job market is hard when first starting out.
