I have been working at Abbott as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible hours are always a plus. Supervisors are understanding for most part. A majority of the colleagues are helpful and friendly. Good work environment and resources.

    Cons

If you are a contractor, don't have high hopes of getting taken on as a full time. Also there's a lot of discrimination between employees and contractors. A lot of bias and favouritism is evident in the hiring process. If you have a relative/ reference high up the ladder, you are almost practically guaranteed the job. HR takes forever to process interviews and paperwork for new candidates (think 4+ months). The food is expensive in the cafeteria and not always of good quality.

    Advice to Management

Be considerate of the talent at disposal without grouping them together as a 'resource', give credit where it's due and work at retaining good people.

I worked at Abbott as a contractor

    Pros

-The next generation technology for the hematology instruments seems interesting and has a lot of potential.
-The company, in general, seems to be excited for the launch of the next generation platform, Alinity, for Abbott Diagnostics.
-The company does compensate their employees really well in terms of salary.

    Cons

-There are a lot of engineers who prefer to hide issues instead of finding engineering solutions. I found that to be pretty unethical and impactful for others in the company trying to right the ship.
-The company was hemorrhaging good workers left and right putting more pressure on the employees already there.
-Despite having extremely aggressive deadlines, there seems to be no planning at all on day to day activity. Something always seemed to come up, forcing me to work overtime on a daily basis.
-Instrument allocation between groups is horrendous. For some groups, the only time they would get access to get work done is on the weekend, as other groups would get priority.

    Advice to Management

-Cut the fat. There are definitely a few employees who do not belong there and are hurting the development instead of helping.
-Create a plan for the lab for the week and stick with it. This will make it a little less chaotic for the people who don't go to the daily Obeya (i.e. the worker bees) and provide a little less chaos in the lab.

I have been working at Abbott full-time

    Pros

Good lower management ( in my case ) , good and helpful people

    Cons

They are very cheap when it comes to rewarding their employees, a lot of pressure to get things done , 10 hour work day, little or no chance to get hired for contractors, nepotism, little or no chance to get promoted unless you play the game right

    Advice to Management

be more progressive, '90s are over

    Pros

Great Benefits; Some of people good to work with.

    Cons

Was a closed network of Senior Management, almost a clique and if not one of their favorites, your career a nightmare

    Advice to Management

Stop blaming your employees. Stop ruling by fear. Stop literally yelling, screaming and swearing at your employees and admit to failures of Senior Management- Quit laying blame on lower level employers.

I worked at Abbott as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Many nice co workers. Nice walking path behind AbbVie buildings. Cute little shop where you can buy craft beers and artisanal cheese within walking distance of Metra. On-site gym (small). Starbucks cafe.

    Cons

Commute from hell if you want to live in Chicago. I do not believe that any company that places itself in the middle of nowhere in Illinois can recruit or retain the best and brightest. They hire a lot of Midwestern suburbanites. They also hire a lot of contractors. There is absolutely nothing around Abbott except some gas stations. You can't leave campus unless you have a car. The commute from Chicago is three hours round trip (to the North side!) on a good day. Passengers on the Metra will hog the seats by placing oversized purses, computers and other crap next to them so you can't sit there. Then you have to board the shuttle buses from the Metra to campus, fifteen minutes each way on a good day. There are obnoxious groups on the shuttles and they don't care if you have to hear their conversations every day. The Abbott cafeteria was awful. The AbbVie cafeteria was a little better.

    Advice to Management

Run commuter buses from Chicago every day.

I worked at Abbott full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Resources are good, great training

    Cons

Results are demanded at the cost of the customer. Often following company initiatives get an employees in trouble due to the message sent to the customer. A "Machavellian Society" where everyone wants to take the credit for others efforts. Often people are put in place because who they know or do, not what they know. Management is ready to label a person and falsely offer help to perpetuate their career.
