I have been working at Abington Memorial Hospital part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The hospital is clean, the staff is surface-friendly, the CA pay is exceptional compared to other hospitals, and as a float pool CA, I'm always able to pick up extra shifts.

    Cons

Extremely short staffed with nurses in every department. You may go weeks without working on the floor because the hospital needs you to watch patients on suicide or safety precautions.

    Advice to Management

Hire more nurses. That truly does affect the entire flow of a department. If the nurses are spread thin and stressed out, they have limited patience for clients or anyone else. I have witnessed nurses throw things at one another out of anger, get berated by a patient's family because she can't get a box of tissue right now because her other patient is 5 seconds away from a rapid response, and skipping breakfast, lunch, and dinner because there is simply no one to cover for a 15 minute break.

I have been working at Abington Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Knowing that your able to be a positive person for patients who are sick. Helping or just having a small conversation with the elderly who may not have family members there with them during their time of need.

    Cons

Overworked, duties constantly being added to job your description and management unappreciative of the work being performed. Admissions positions that were of another salary grade were phased out yet to be placed on another and lower grade making those employees who previously performed the job reapply for those positions. The salaries not comparable to the City Hospital at least 2 to 3 dollars lower . Yet the demand of patients is just as much or more as a City Hospital.

    Advice to Management

Before making decisions on how the job can be performed and your staff can better be utilized speak with the staff that's doing the job.

I worked at Abington Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people! I worked with all the attending medical staff and their office support staff. My job was to be a liaison between the on and off campus medical practice with the various ancillary services within the main hospital(s) as well as administration and any/all updates as to the ongoing changes/enhancements that the hospitals were undergoing.

    Cons

Very few raises, and minimal at best. There was more emphasis toward the medical practices that were owned by the hospital, predominantly primary care physicians and not enough toward the referring doctors and surgeons.

    Advice to Management

Do more to boost the overall morale of the hospital and remember, even though it has become a huge corporation, never lose focus on making employees feel valued and a part of the big picture.

    Be more flexible.
