I have been working at Abrakadoodle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The teaching at Abrakadoodle very rewarding because everyday I see young minds open up to the world of Art. This job gives me the opportunity to utilize my skills while interacting with children as well as adults doing what I love.

    Cons

I love this job but the only con regarding Abrakadoodle is that it is only a part time position. At this point in my life I need full time employment

I worked at Abrakadoodle part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, good teaching experience and ability to pick and choose classes, age groups, camps, etc. opportunities for extra if you sub for other teachers.Lessons and materials are provided. Nice product with pleasing frames that the parents love. Other teachers are a good, Responsible decent group of people to work with

    Cons

You will not be paid for all the prep time you need to be ready for lessons, you won't be paid for all the loading, unloading, organizing prep time needed to do a proper job

    Advice to Management

More generous in terms of paying prep time would improve loyalty, longevity and morale of your employees

I worked at Abrakadoodle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Predictable schedule.

Typically prep for one class covers all your classes that week.

Get to work at a different school each day of the week.

    Cons

Little room to add hours or make more.

    Prep time unpaid.

Have to discuss parent complaints, that you can't resolve, at pickup

I have been working at Abrakadoodle part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely rewarding. Supervisors easy to work with and very hands-off, supporting changes to lesson plans as you see fit. Also support ideas and help you implement them. Very willing to work with my class schedule.

    Cons

I had to drive to several schools. One of the supervisors was a little scatterbrained, but who isn't?

    Advice to Management

The once a month classes for foster children while their foster parents meet was extremely difficult. Sometimes there were 25 students, sometimes 50 and many were disruptive and the "helpers" provided ignored the trouble makers.

We have a great support staff and positive thinkers. They give great feedback and helpful ideas. They cheer you on and keep things going in a positive way. They give you a lot of freedom to be creative and explore your won ideas. Great support when involved with problems of in the school you are working.

    Cons

Sometimes it's hard to get to teacher meetings but they are always trying to make that easier and better.

    Advice to Management

Keep a line of communication with your teachers on a weekly bases.

I worked at Abrakadoodle full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I was given a blue print for business ownership after having tried to create several independent businesses on my own or with partners prior to purchasing this franchise. The model was an excellent one for learning the good, the bad and the tough of small business ownership while still being able to support my family and being supported by a friendly system. Though the initial training was not sufficient (we started when the franchisor was just starting out and hadn't figured out the key systems yet to manage growth) our fellow franchisees and staff at the head office were always willing to learn and grow with us. As an owner you can grow your business any way you like- lots of products to choose from!

    Cons

This is a high turnover business due to the parttime nature of the staff. That can become draining if you don't put some key measures in place to train and retain staff over time. It took us a few years to get a grasp on how to do that well.

    Advice to Management

This is a great business for seriously minded business people who also want to make a difference on a community level. The business changes each year so it's good to have strong training programs in place year round for franchisees and staff.

    I worked at Abrakadoodle full-time

    Pros

    - working with children
    - creativity
    - being own boss
    - art education

    Cons

    - minimal to no corporate support, except when you first become owner
    - impossible to make $ (most owners lose $)
    - Rosemarie, acting CEO, more concerned with squeezing out each penny of profit than investing in owners, their success &/or future of franchise
    - teacher staffing very difficult
    - a lot of work for very little, if any, profit
    - majority of owners could not exist on income (have to have working partner/spouse) so this is a very expensive "job"
    - need lots of space for inventory
    - inventory management is difficult

    Advice to Management

    - invest in company's future
    - listen to owners & provide resources that owners need not what you want to offer
    - hire better corporate staff to help owners, not just cheap labor to fill a position

I worked at Abrakadoodle full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Chance to operate independently and make decisions on the ground that were best for the local business, but within the parameters and guidance of a strong brand.

    Cons

Burn out can be high based on volume of staff turnover, though we were able to put some best practices in place that severely reduced turnover. Training on this did not come from head office but from other franchisees.

    Advice to Management

Would have been nice to receive more options for ongoing training for veteran businesses as the corporate training was geared mainly towards new business operators only.
