    Pros

Very good at what they do. Really care. Approachable management.

    Cons

Perpetually understaffed. Lots of double shifts. Only get weekends off with seniority.

    Advice to Management

Solve staffing. Maybe ensuring at least 1 weekend off per month?

    Pros

Impactful Role, Autonomous Schedule, Able To Help Youth

    Cons

Management Does Not Respond To Complaints, Illegal Treatment Of Employees

    Advice to Management

Management should take heed to complaints by employees. Ignoring grievances sends message that employees do not matter, creating high turnover.

    Pros

This is a great place were you can really help people if that is what you really want to do.

    Cons

The pay is horrible and they don't really work as a team like they say. It is under new management so maybe it will get better.

    Advice to Management

you should make your employees feel like they are apart of a team and not just a position needing to be filled.

    Pros

An overall helpful team atmosphere was present there. The other staff seemed supportive and willing to help out. They were encouraging when it was tough to work with others.

    Cons

There were many different ways of doing the YDS position. There is a manual of what the rules of life are to be for the children in the detention center, yet many of the YDS's enforced some of these rules selectively, or did things quite differently, which made figuring out a consistent way of acting difficult.

    Advice to Management

Discuss further with employees in advance of their time on the floor how they could respond to people who enforce different rules than what is suggested. Also, after the first full week with an employee working on their own, make time to sit and talk with them about how their experience is going.

I worked at Abraxas Youth & Family Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked at the facility in Shelby Ohio. Cornell Abraxas Company owns all. This is a business. That's all. It's all to make money. They don't try to rehabilitate these kids, they lie to keep the kids there & get more funding from the state. I can't believe they get away with what they do. I started off in this field because I wanted to help & make a difference, but I'd rather work in fast food than to ever work for a nationwide company who abuse children.

    Cons

Cruel and unusual punishment towards the patients. Staff having sexual relations with patients. Management what management? The few people that are still there for the children's sake are powerless & look the other way. It's dirtiest place on top of the treatment. I honestly don't know how this place isn't shut down.

    Advice to Management

Shut the place down, that's all that can be done at this point.

    Pros

Teaching youth to be productive members of their society can be rewarding especially when you see the change occur. The larger motivator behind the company is that is is almost like being a member of a family once you have established relationships with your co-workers.

    Cons

Scheduling is a huge down fall as well as dealing with difficult clients

    Advice to Management

Work on a better schedule for the committed employees

I have been working at Abraxas Youth & Family Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits and PTO. Free meal if you like junk food.

    Cons

Inept employees who treat clients like they are prisoners. Management turns their head the other way when people are treated poorly. Lots of time spent on enforcing rules and very little time spent on the reason they are there, for treatment. I can't wait for the day when I can say bye-bye. Short staffed at all times. Punitive based treatment. Not a person there knows or cares about a therapeutic community.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees and recognize the ones who show up and do the job properly. Invest in keeping good employees by paying more and stop worrying about filling beds with as few employees as possible. It's a walking on eggshells work environment. Not pleasant at all.
