    Pros

Flexibility in work schedule and part-time.
    Wonderful and intelligent colleagues.
Ability to work on diversity of projects, filling diversity of roles

    Cons

In a bit of a rough patch. Recent round of layoffs. More and more emphasis on billability, akin to lawyers but not paid nearly as well. Does not invest in long term development of employees

I worked at Abt Associates full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I was at Abt for nearly a decade, best second job (should have been my first). A lot of growth occurred in the first 5 years.
    - My manager helped me develop a lot of my technical skills. While our practice leader leveraged our skills to help out across the company. They were mindful and helped me manage work-life balance, which becomes very difficult when working for different groups with conflicting interests and goals. (before 2017 changes)
    - Allowed to use vacation which I had not earned yet
    - Kind and smart co-workers
    - Free parking, for now
    - Great garden space for summer lunches; We even had a veggie garden to grow and take home fresh produce.

    Cons

    - Rough patch is an understatement. Morale has been really low since Nov
    - With the layoff of some; it forced too many to fill in shoes that they weren't ready for. It disrupted work-life balance for many.
    - Leadership is now non-existent; most were in survival fear mod
    - Lost a lot of the true Data Scientist in the company
    - Don't expect market rate salaries as a developers or programmers. Making it very difficult to hire junior programmers.
    - Work around 45 hours weekly, up to 55 hours per week (unpaid)
    - Clear lack of diversity among division staff - mostly white
    - Used to have a really great HSA health plan, which had low premiums and low risk (e.g., 0% co-insurance after-deductions, in case something serious occurred); along with an opportunity to save and invest unused money if healthy.
    - Never figured out how an employee owned company makes important decisions
    - In recent years the company has relayed too much on outside consultants for its IT infrastructure and HR Health Benefits. And the staff in IT and HR don't seem to fully grasp what is being advised to them. And we have suffered the consequence of the decision made: the unreasonable rate and deductions for the HSA healthcare plan ; and lack of reliable analytic platform.

    Advice to Management

Create or leverage department titles and tracks for division programmers and developers.

Have a better plan than fire a lot of the senior staff that have strong relationships with clients and think that it can be managed by one new/recently-ish hired senior staff.

I have been working at Abt Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company offers good benefits packages

    Cons

There is too much talk about work-life balance and not enough actual work-life balance. Company emails seem like spam after getting multiple emails a day.

I have been working at Abt Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting/stimulating work, incredible colleagues. Very flexible work environment and laid back atmosphere (feels very academic).

    Cons

A lot of changes happening at the company. Lay-offs, changing offices in the near future. Morale is low and management feels distant and uncaring. A lot of lost trust among employees.

    Advice to Management

Try to win back the trust of employees. Really listen to them. Stop the track towards becoming just another big corporation that doesn't care about their employees.

    Pros

Nice company mission, nice co-workers, flexible hours home - office

    Cons

management disconnect, too many managers too few employees to do the work

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees, recent changes and near future changes (location change, main software change) do not look promising

I worked at Abt Associates (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to learn job skills. Extremely intelligent co-workers.

    Cons

Because of the intelligence of the co-workers that can make it difficult to progress in projects. Too many leaders and not enough workers to implement projects. Any employees like to talk more than actually implement. Leaders do not let employees make decisions. Too many leaders involved in decisions causing a slowdown of implementation. Pay raises are horrid. They give you a good one the first year to make you think you will get a good one the following year after working long hours. They are a for-profit company and the profits go to the upper level who get great bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees. Give them an incentive to work hard. The young kids will work for the "good job" comments but then will realize that is all you get. No raises and no bonuses.
Stop dangling carrots and actually pay for the work people are doing. I see this company going down the tubes quickly.

I have been working at Abt Associates part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone in the office is excited to be there and kind and helpful. The dress code is rather casual for a consulting firm which sets a relaxed and welcoming mood where people aren't "stiff"

    Cons

They often hire from the outside, and therefore it is not super easy to move up

I worked at Abt Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very caring mentors who value the opinions of junior staff, great diversity of projects, ability to work on multiple projects at once, academic feel without being in academia, working on real world problems, only expected to work about 40 hours a week, great on work-life balance

    Cons

The different divisions are fairly siloed but the company is working on collaboration across divisions, don't get the huge perks of private consulting firms (like free meals, etc.), wage increases have been pretty low

    Advice to Management

Make a bigger investment in junior staff so they stay longer and don't feel they have to move on within 2-3 years
