I have been working at Abt Associates part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone in the office is excited to be there and kind and helpful. The dress code is rather casual for a consulting firm which sets a relaxed and welcoming mood where people aren't "stiff"

    Cons

They often hire from the outside, and therefore it is not super easy to move up

I worked at Abt Associates (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to learn job skills. Extremely intelligent co-workers.

    Cons

Because of the intelligence of the co-workers that can make it difficult to progress in projects. Too many leaders and not enough workers to implement projects. Any employees like to talk more than actually implement. Leaders do not let employees make decisions. Too many leaders involved in decisions causing a slowdown of implementation. Pay raises are horrid. They give you a good one the first year to make you think you will get a good one the following year after working long hours. They are a for-profit company and the profits go to the upper level who get great bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees. Give them an incentive to work hard. The young kids will work for the "good job" comments but then will realize that is all you get. No raises and no bonuses.
Stop dangling carrots and actually pay for the work people are doing. I see this company going down the tubes quickly.

I worked at Abt Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very caring mentors who value the opinions of junior staff, great diversity of projects, ability to work on multiple projects at once, academic feel without being in academia, working on real world problems, only expected to work about 40 hours a week, great on work-life balance

    Cons

The different divisions are fairly siloed but the company is working on collaboration across divisions, don't get the huge perks of private consulting firms (like free meals, etc.), wage increases have been pretty low

    Advice to Management

Make a bigger investment in junior staff so they stay longer and don't feel they have to move on within 2-3 years

I have been working at Abt Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Work/life balance is quite good (so far). Given that you complete your required billed 40 hours per week, you are usually free to leave as you please (at more junior level positions).

-Good amount of vacation and sick time (above industry standards).

    -Division directors are surprisingly accessible.

-If you have a question about how to perform a certain task someone will usually be willing to help you out rather than leaving you to fend for yourself.

-Relative ease in working from home.

-Incredibly intelligent and talented coworkers. A great place to acquire practical research skills.

    Cons

-Immature staff both at junior and senior levels, with incredible amounts of gossip happening everywhere. Some senior staff will openly trash talk junior employees who perform poorly on a task, while some junior staff partake in passive-aggressive games with each other whilst simultaneously seeking to curry favor from certain project directors.

-Hard work often goes unnoticed. Most senior staff and project leaders seem to be blissfully unaware of the spot-recognition system for junior and mid-level employees. A very hardworking and talented employee who has been with the company for a number of years can receive just one commendation whereas another (with identical or less skill) with the company for a third of the time can have a dozen.

-Junior and mid-level staff are sometimes treated as personal assistants and given menial tasks that waste both time and money.

-Lack of diversity amongst staff - predominantly white and female.

-Salary is low for the industry, and certainly for the location.

    Advice to Management

Realize that there is a severe imbalance between people in leadership and people who do most technical work. Take our motto and apply it internally.
