I have been working at Abt Associates as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    PAID!
Flexible hours, mentorship, professional development, and engaging work. They treat you like an actual employee. The best internship experience I've had so far.

    Cons

Employees here are very busy which makes for a high-pressure and fast-paced environment. Might not suit well for people who are easily overwhelmed.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I have been working at Abt Associates part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone in the office is excited to be there and kind and helpful. The dress code is rather casual for a consulting firm which sets a relaxed and welcoming mood where people aren't "stiff"

    Cons

They often hire from the outside, and therefore it is not super easy to move up

I worked at Abt Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very caring mentors who value the opinions of junior staff, great diversity of projects, ability to work on multiple projects at once, academic feel without being in academia, working on real world problems, only expected to work about 40 hours a week, great on work-life balance

    Cons

The different divisions are fairly siloed but the company is working on collaboration across divisions, don't get the huge perks of private consulting firms (like free meals, etc.), wage increases have been pretty low

    Advice to Management

Make a bigger investment in junior staff so they stay longer and don't feel they have to move on within 2-3 years

I have been working at Abt Associates (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work/life balance, benefits, and challenging opportunities.

    Cons

For me the location makes for a long commute but remote working as option balances this out.

I worked at Abt Associates full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Abt Associates is involved in some of the most gratifying work around the world. Their mission is to "Improve the quality of lives and economic well-being of people around the world". They support the people who need it the most and have an impact that is hard to not get behind. Employee owned. Huge promoter of work-life balance and telecommuting.

    Cons

This company is pretty frugal when it comes to spending money on equipment like laptops, and holiday events (no open bar, just one drink ticket and no guests). Any happy hours or events are mostly imitated and paid for by the employees who make the decision to socialize outside of work.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in your employees. Abt has stripped more and more away from employees, I would like to see a return to where Abt was years ago when company perks included more than just a paycheck and general benefits.

I worked at Abt Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I got tons of opportunities to try my hand at new things, learned about econometrics and policy issues, the work-life balance was great, and my coworkers were awesome people who I am still friends with years later.

    Cons

Economists and policy wonks don't make the best managers. Also the salaries are low. If the administration steers contracts to small businesses, it makes it tough to win contracts.

    Advice to Management

Keep the good work-life balance. This is a great place to work for parents who need flexibility in their work schedules.

I have been working at Abt Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a very smart (sometimes too smart) firm. It's a place where you get exposure to some of the best economists and evaluation experts in the US. There are a lot of opportunities to get published in top journals and to get the mentoring you need to build a great career in health or economics.

    Cons

It can be very nerdy. Sometimes the discussions get bogged down into very boring detail. The firm has a lot of PhDs, and while they are awesome at their jobs, they sometimes tend to think like academics and not focus on practical issues.

    Advice to Management

Maybe give some awards to younger people. All the prizes go to very senior economists, and that's okay, but often the younger folks feel a bit left out of the picture.

I have been working at Abt Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Abt Associates is a well-respected government contractor in a variety of fields, and is growing rapidly. As a result staff are exposed to many different types of work (although this varies by division). The executives are focused on keeping Abt at the cutting edge technologically, giving the firm an upper hand in an industry were methods are typically slow to change. The company is packed with smart people who on the whole care about their coworkers, and actively promote a positive work environment. The company is generally supportive of staff who want to use company money for professional development, such as take a course for college credit. The benefits are great and again, great people.

    Cons

Junior staff need to be active in networking, building relationships, and seeking out the kind of work that they're interested in. If not, one runs a risk of being sidelined on monotonous projects. No one hold's your hand, and failure to adapt can mean a much less fulfilling experience.

Abt also does not specifically hire managers, but has its technical staff do the managing. This is sometimes problematic, especially with low-level managers that may not have the tightest grasp on good management practice.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent with employees about business outlook (there were some issues with hiding the true cost of the sequester). Invest more in management training.

Also some divisions will benefit from catching up with the company as a whole and adopting the kind of forward thinking that has done so much to help the company grow.
