I have been working at Abt Associates full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Company has been transformed and professionalized in recent years with new library, IT, HR, production and other systems
    - Smart people
    - Interesting work
    - Flexible work schedules
    - Interesting building to work in, close to Fresh Pond walking trail
    - On-site cafeteria, yoga/pilates classes
    - CEO listens to and is interested in staff at all levels
    - Staff are consulted on some important company decisions

    Cons

    - Collegial with peers, but organization as a whole is very hierarchical and feels stifling.
    - No formal mechanism for upwards assessment. Feedback is one-way, top-down, all the way down the chain. This is bad for creativity and stressful to staff.
    - As a result, even senior staff can feel disempowered, disrespected and unappreciated in day-to-day interactions with people they report to.
    - Pay is not adjusted for cost of living in Abt's various locations. If you have young children, in Boston, compensation is insufficient to cover rent, daycare and living expenses.

    Advice to Management

    - Develop and implement an upwards assessment system.
    - Every quarter or so, spend some time listening to staff who report to you. Talk with your direct reports, and also separately talk with people who report to or work with them. Address feedback as it arises, and model how you would like staff to respond to your feedback.
    - Offer a childcare subsidy benefit. The flexible spending account benefit is insufficient to meet basic needs.

    Pros

Collegial, strong technical & project management staff. Strong commitment to technical excellence.

I have been working at Abt Associates part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Talented staff, many different projects, and has managed to be successful over the past several years even while competitors have foundered

    Cons

Many staff, especially junior staff, have challenges finding adequate coverage when the projects they are hired for end. Need a better labor management system.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to retain talented junior staff -- and find opportunities for them to expand their skill sets and not just serve as glorified administrative assistants.

    Pros

Plenty of bright, talented people to work with and learn from.

Great environment for entrepreneurial types who can advocate for themselves and seek out billable work when between projects.

High quality technical work based on rigorous standards.

Can be intense, but culture is casual and friendly for the most part.

    Cons

Although changing and improving, operational and administrative systems still too complex and make it difficult to get simple project tasks done at times.

Difficult to maintain billing hours if you're not assigned to a project.

Limited ability to advance for mid- and senior-level staff.

    Pros

Abt is one of the fastest growing companies in its field of work, and while that means it has great people and is well respected, it also means that the company has is struggling with managing this growth.

    Cons

Abt used to be a mostly domestic consulting company. It is now largely an international consulting company and is struggling to adapt its way of working and systems to support an international presence

    Advice to Management

The International business should be the priority now
