    Pros

Being a rapidly growing, privately owned company, Academy manages to hang onto the more personal atmosphere of a smaller business. It is a good place to work, and learn to work as a member of a team.

    Cons

Sometimes, there is a breakdown of the management process. Some managers tend to just blame their associates for things not being done, rather than consider that their management skills could play a part. However, that is more of a reflection on the individual manager than on the company itself. Academy, as a company, is working hard on improving its associate training program to insure all employees are equipped with the necessary skills to be successful.

    Advice to Management

store level management- need to focus on blaming associates less, when the main problem is poor supervision. Be more active with the hands-on aspect of supervising employees. Managers shouldnt ever be in the dark about what is going on in their department.
Corporate level management- need to work together more between the different departments (buyers need to work more with pricing coordinators, etc)

    Cons

Younger workers sometimes don't pull their weight

    Advice to Management

Invest in some DECENT bags that won't tear when you put the merchanise in them. A top notch store needs a top notch bag-----not the flimsy ones we have now

    Pros

The management is one of the best I've had experienced, very nice and extremely helpful team leads and managers. There are a few intimidating and grumpy co-workers but that's everywhere. Atmosphere is overall awesome and A+ from my past job experiences. They give a 90 day review and .25 increase of pay if you do good. It's easy place to work at and a wonderful place to start. Great school job with flexible hours that fit within your busy schedule. Lots of perks for college students and full time employees.

    Cons

Hours for part time sucks. They are flexible and work with your schedule but will only give you 18-34 hrs a week max if lucky. This would be a perfect college or school job but I have bills to pay and need more then 20 hours a week.

I have been working at Academy Sports + Outdoors full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Corporate structure, family oriented, competitive pay. They have a matching 401 (k) up to 6%, fully vested on day one of the program.

    Cons

Adjusting to the new owners, which is typical and not really a con.

    Advice to Management

Lets all work harder and run the competitor out of town.

I have been working at Academy Sports + Outdoors full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun work enviroment, easy to advance, a lot of new stores always opening, easy to move departments.

    Cons

Bad hours(its retail so should be expected), pay is low, and raises are not given based on performance.

    Advice to Management

It does not make sense that people hired from outside make more than people promoted from within. Make sure politics and favortism stays outside the workplace.

I worked at Academy Sports + Outdoors part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

great discounts, i love the team leaders, great management structure, very well organized, good opportunities to advance or change positions, active in the community

    Cons

the main problem I have is the policy of mandatory working on black friday, and some times even though you are scheduled to leave at 10pm, you wont be able to leave till other departments finish their jobs.

    Advice to Management

work on keeping productivity up later on in the night. Keep one or two associates on customer service duties, and the others working on closing duties.

  9. "Awesome experience overall, great company!"

    Pros

Great nice company with very nice people and great deals. Treated me well and had decent pay for part time job.

    Cons

Would schedule you 30-40 hours or 39 hours as a part time person, and would cut your hours a lot

    Advice to Management

Give members more training and teach them about products more.
