I have been working at Academy of Art University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people - boss, staff and coworkers; people are very professional! Students are also great! The buildings are cool too.

    Cons

The school hires too many part-time instructors. Full-time positions should be offered instead. There should be a rule about the ratio of the number of part timers to the number of full timers. This problem is not unique to this university however. Community Colleges also use this strategy to avoid paying benefits associated with full-time employment.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more full-time.

I have been working at Academy of Art University part-time

    Pros

Being around art. Interesting, talented art instructors.

    Cons

Low pay for living in a highly expensive area. It's obvious that the CEO is extremely wealthy and greedy. Recent university growth was achieved through the efforts of hard-working staff who have not benefitted from the profits.

    Advice to Management

The latest in the new practice of management responding to the continuous stream of negative reviews here is quite something. No one I outside of AAU that I tell about Christmas at AAU can believe the rudeness and lack of respect directed toward part-time faculty. While full-time employees are treated to a lavish party and then gloat about their Bingo prizes, part-timers are not even invited! It's tacky, disrespectful, and incredibly clueless on the part of management. It also speaks volumes about the attitude of upper management toward the huge pool of talented part-time employees, without which the school would not function. Whoever is tasked with writing the corporate-speak, defensive, ridiculous responses to these reviews might as well stop. And for anyone reading them- know that they are not true. There is no professional, transparent, fair review process at AAU. Raises are *not* given yearly.

    Pros

Good place to get experience as a teacher.
    Fun students
    Very international environment
Great opportunities for passionate ESL teachers

    Cons

    Almost zero chance for advancement
Some departments have an inner cabal that is nigh on impossible to crack
Does not value hard work of teachers, don't expect extra work to be recognized
    Skimpy pay increases
Lots of unpaid work expected of part time employees

    Advice to Management

Value education as much as you do profits.

    Pros

I really liked the department I worked for. My boss was great, if I needed more hours he went out of his way to try to get me as many hours as I wanted.

    Cons

AAU is better if you are hired as a full time since part time you get no benefit package.

I have been working at Academy of Art University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The other instructors are top notch. They are knowledgeable in their subject matter, most are professionals in their fields and they really care about the students. The students are a diverse group , both age and talent-wise, but most are hard working and really want to get the most out of their education..

    Cons

The administration is too corporate and tries to standardize a field that should not be standardized. The Academy has become increasingly more structured and allows the individual instructor much less flexibility in planning their classes.

    Advice to Management

Trust the instructors to do what is best for their students.

I have been working at Academy of Art University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The online program has developed into a very strong resource for higher education.

    Cons

As with any online program, I believe it has its limitations; physical interaction. But that being said, it also offers opportunity for individuals that may never have been able to receive such an education due to geographic and physical limitations.

    Advice to Management

The unfortunate reality is that education is a business. But the teachers are the pulse of the industry and should be compensated appropriately. Not viewed as "a dime a dozen".
