I have been working at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences full-time

      Pros

      - Iconic brand that gives back to the community it supports. - Working alongside passionate, creative people.

      Cons

The Academy has been around for a long time, so it is still trying to catch up in terms of a modern work culture, but it is headed in the right direction!

      Advice to Management

Look after staff at all levels, not just senior staff.

I worked at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

You get to see all of the movie releases, sometimes ahead of time.

      Cons

The CEO, Dawn Hudson... I simply cannot find anything nice to say about her leadership or lack thereof. Problems start at the top and she is definitely the reason why the opportunity has been missed for this company to be a workplace of inspiration and innovation. She is rude to staff, lazy, inconsistent, habitually late to all meetings, careless. She reduces the morale of the entire building. Everyone who works...

I have been working at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Wonderful place to work if you love cinema

      Cons

as in any other job, if you are patient with people’s egos and insecurities, you will eventually feel part of a family.

      Advice to Management

Be authentic. Communicate with employees at all levels. Listen and create positive atmosphere.

I have been working at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences part-time

      Pros

      Great community and fun benefits

      Cons

Theatre Staff is often used to temp in other departments. At first it seems as though this might lead to growth within the company, but after you've been there a while, you realize they are only using you so they can temporarily pay a low hourly rate rather than having to hire someone for more money. Eventually, Theatre Staffers have to take on other jobs to be able to support themselves.

I worked at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences full-time

      Pros

One of the best positions I've held was working for AMPAS. What impressed me the most of the support I received in the position that I held during the Oscars.

      Cons

Can't really thing of any Cons. It was a great experience.

I have been working at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences full-time

      Pros

Good perks: attending the Oscars, watching old and new movies in outstanding venues, generous time off over winter holidays and during the summer, some public transit incentives

      Cons

Low pay unless you are in upper management or the CEO. Lack of opportunities for advancement. Rampant cronyism, favoritism. Inept managers that are entirely disinterested in their employees, their work, their careers and the institution in general.

      Advice to Management

Implement some 360 degree reviews to begin addressing some of the horrendous management. Pay salaries that are realistic for the cost-of-living in Los Angeles. Take your employees seriously when they come to HR with grievances. Practice what you preach regarding diversity and inclusion ... hiring women, People of Color and LGBTQI+ folks is an essential start, but as long as we are suffering under atrocious (and re: issues...

I have been working at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences full-time

      Pros

The job comes with many great perks like getting to attend Academy Member screenings and getting to attend or seat-fill at the Oscars. Decent benefits. Environment varies depending what building you work in.

      Cons

Overall, it's still an old-boys club. Not that many people get promoted. Employees who have worked hard and for a long time aren't always given the opportunity or raise they deserve.

      Advice to Management

Acknowledge employees working hard and not with just a "good job".

I worked at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences part-time

        Pros

There are none, except getting to say you work for the Academy.

        Cons

While the main building is glamorous, the IT department is dirty, unkempt, and hazardous. Management is unprofessional. No wonder they keep them separate from everyone else.

I worked at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences part-time for more than 2 years

        Pros

-Free membership screening attendance -Oscar tickets -Lots of free food -Paid week off for holidays

        Cons

-Unstable environment -Low morale -Managers/directors don't know how to run departments -Part-time staff without benefits do a ton of the work for managers and directors, but never get the credit -Constantly reminding you how lucky you are to have a job as an excuse to overwork and take advantage of employees

        Advice to Management

Pay you're part-time theater staffers more than interns, especially when these part-time workers who usually work over 40hrs a week in a department without benefits, have to train and supervise the intern.
