I worked at Accela, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Close commute for EB residents.
Free Lunches several days a week.
    Nice facility.
A lot of smart, nice people.

    Cons

No appetite to improve processes, controls and implement "Best Practices".
Growth plans based on unrealistic expectations.
Lakes focused leadership with M&A and integration plan.
Old CEO raised large amounts of capital giving away company with very little actually hitting B/S. Resulting in management now focused on getting company sold to recoup investment.
Executive team making decisions to eliminate acquired company staff date with no focus on integration and if surviving employees have time or resources to pick up existing staff.
Gives away revenue trying to generate cash.
No discipline in Sales, give away the store and manage to get commissioned anyway.

    Advice to Management

Set tone for company from top
More consistency and team work cross functionally
Allow employees to bring ideas and discipline to the company
Promote a "team work" culture where everyone is working gladly and with passion towards making company success

I worked at Accela, Inc. full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Free food
    - A handful of great co-workers

    Cons

No direction at all and when trying to create direction upper management would only disagree.

Tech stack improvements were always denied leading to working with foundation code over 15 years old ONLY when trying to make new features or improvements.

No leadership ladder or processes in place at all.

No thought about the customer or their needs and wants but rather what can keep the company just above water to continue day-to-day operations. Lastly, if you like being micro-managed or wish to learn how to micro-manage this is the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Make clear decisive goals and be transparent about them. If your going to work towards a KPI actually do it and not just talk about it or ‘fluff’ it. The customer is everything but have yet to figure that out. Install procedures that work and improve on them, and do it quickly rather then spend 2 hour meetings every other day for 3 months figuring out a single action item. Create career paths for employees and outline positional growth instead of making it up. Get out of start-up mode unless that is what it still is.

I worked at Accela, Inc. full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Despite negative comments, here are some redeeming qualities:

    Reasonable Wages & Benefits
Employee Perks & Events (i.e. free lunches)

    Cons

    Incohesive communications between departments
    Disingenuous and immature "management" staff
    Weak internal processes

"Great Place to Work" in 2016 -- really?!
This company underwent massive layoffs (less than six months apart) in 2016 and it's been struggling due to several restructurings within the past few years. And all the glowing remarks here (esp. in March 2016) seems fishy to me.

    Advice to Management

Focus on continuous improvements: employee training, incentives, tighter controls

I worked at Accela, Inc. full-time

    Pros

Lunches, coffee, snacks, great pay, but it ends there.

    Cons

Almost 3 years of working at Accela feels a little like whip lash from a car accident. Middle management was always changing, and major changes with executive team lead to a lot of confusion and lack of direction. Many of my own projects changed at a moments notice or discontinued. Very discouraging. Not much employee support or opportunities for development and career growth. Grateful to have been laid off.

I have been working at Accela, Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very much opportunity to learn while we be refactoring code. The head of engineering likes to tell stories. We be having fun listen to what story he will be needful of telling.

Liking the culture, we are having food Mondays and Wednesdays. We be having weekly learn and lunches on lots of topics like java topics. I be learning more every week !

I really be liking my chair, it's black and be having a high back, and I use a dell computer.

    Cons

I would be thinking of something to write that is pro not, yet I can not now.

    Advice to Management

    hoping to see a bonus

    Pros

If you are looking for a company that doesn't hire A list programmers, this is the place to work. They offer a above average salary, decent benefits and a job atmosphere where they reward under-performers. The bar is set so low that if you have a few years of experience of building high-performing web apps, you'll run circles around the programming team.

    Cons

Most of the software programmers San Ramon have barely negligible skills. The company last any solid technical vision. If you try an introduce any modern frameworks, pipelines or front-ends, you're met with frightened stares of pending doom.

You day to day job will be maintaining 20+ year old software that badly needs a refresh on their technology stack. After all, you don't have to be the industry leader when you p̶r̶o̶d̶u̶c̶e̶ maintain government software.

The CTO lacks any real vision to lead the software programmers. In reality he was brought in to tell stories that make no sense. That the last time he actually produced something great was.... well never. All real software devolvement for their main product is outsourced to China, leaving the software programing department with out any real understanding of their main software product.

    Advice to Management

Fire the top people in your engineering staff and actually hire people that can produce performance web applications and have a proven track record. You have a few strong leaders with your smaller products. Listen to the people on the ground that actually understand what their doing and don't brag about the giant windfall you got coming in to the company (Advice for C-Level person) while pulling all equity from your employees.

    Cons

The new leadership and CEO are making bizarre decisions. None of them seem to understand the government sector.

    Advice to Management

Don’t make jokes as you tell your employees their equity is now worthless while you just raked in a few million off the deal. Try being a decent human being instead.

    Pros

Free food sometimes, can work from home sometimes.

    Cons

When employees managers like are bad at their jobs, they get promoted. Creating new problems until they get moved somewhere else or quit. Service Level Agreements with clients are never met because support has been short staffed for years.

    Advice to Management

Promote to management from within based on merit. A foreign concept once refereed to as common sense.
