    Pros

Accion has a very dedicated team that gives a family type setting. Excellent co-workers, room to have fun, and celebrate each other and our successes.

    Cons

Low investment in marketing the organization because we are a non-profit gives loan officers a larger outreach responsibility with limited resources. Work / Life balance can be hard to establish. Miscommunication of loan requirements or procedures between internal teams that cause difficult customer service situations for loan officers. Stricter underwriting rules make us less effective at serving the demographics we are meant to serve.

    Advice to Management

Ensure that each team and each team member is knowledgeable about the current procedures and for underwriting and portfolio quality in order to provide a more seamless experience for customers.

I have been working at Accion full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

In recent years, HR has made great strides in employee engagement and appreciation (field days, happy hours, e-learning opportunities, Lean In groups, etc.). Staff are very mission driven and get along for the most part. The newer offices in Cambridge and DC are very nice. The health benefits are great. The 403(b)/retirement benefits could be better.

    Cons

Respect is one of Accion's core values, but this is not evident throughout the organization. There are many people who might be described politely as having "strong personalities" but more accurately should be described as extremely difficult and in some extreme cases as bullies. These people poison a mostly good organization and make it difficult for the employees who are trying to advance Accion's mission to do their jobs. These people should have their direct reports taken away, put on a performance review plan, and should be fired if the situation does drastically improve.

Promotions and growth opportunities are few and far between. It costs more money to train a new employee than it does to promote from within and develop your staff. If you want employees to stay longer than 2 years, give them recognition, respect, and opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Set priorities and clearly communicate them throughout the organization. Every employee should know how his or her personal goals fit into their project/program/department goals and how those goals fit into the overall organization goals.

Revamp the budgeting process. It is way to stressful, takes too long, and creates animosity between program staff, finance, and resource development. Give project staff the budget they need to meet their project goals. Project goals should be part of the the budgeting process. If you are going to cut someone's budget, get an understanding of how that will impact their project goals. If you cut a budget by 50%, perhaps the project goals will be cut by 50% or more. This will impact the overall organization's goals and reach. These types of discussions do not seem to be happening.

Management talks to each other more than in the past, but at least one senior manager needs to based in each of Accion's five offices. There only seems to be one senior manager actively engaged in the Bogota office, the other four offices do not have active leadership. This allows poor behavior to permit the offices. People are late to meetings, speak very disrespectfully to each other, and even some bullying. These are serious issues that need to be addressed. They are distracting and demoralizing for employees who behave appropriately.
