I worked at Accuray full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employee commitment and expertise, Products performance and leading edge technology. Difficult to find 20 word minimum requirement to describe the "Pro's" for Accuray

    Cons

Management team has no understanding how to grow revenue or establish realistic fiscal expectations. They have not grasped the concept of " Under promise and Over deliver" for the Street having not met revenue or growth targets for 5-years.
Disappointing given the State-of-the-Art position of the products

    Pros

Competitive pay for a medical device company. Cool Technology

    Cons

Working almost every other weekend and lots of late nights during the week for field service seems to be the norm for this company. Very poor work life balance. The company has had 2 layoffs since I was hired 9 months ago. Also lots of problems with bad parts and out of date procedures that frankly are useless. It's like trying to fix something without using your hands. It doesn't work very well. I can't wait to leave this job! After 20yrs in field service I can honestly say this has been the worst so far. My advice would be keep looking...you don't want to work here.

    Pros

Product has the ability to make an impact in patient's lives.

    Cons

Just about everything else. Poor quality management is widespread. Deteriorating company culture. High turnover. Very low morale in the remaining workforce. Creativity and desire to build a great product for patients is driven out of employees. You would think it should be difficult for a health care company to not be a fulfilling place to work. Sadly, this is a truly impressive feat of destruction!

    Advice to Management

I suppose it is easy to point the finger at management, however, in this case, maybe taking a hard look at the culture created by current management would be worthwhile. Remove the most toxic managers. Create an environment people want to work in.

I have been working at Accuray full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great product and great people. Although the product innovation is almost gone and now falling behind competition ...

    Cons

Extremely bad management - especially the executive team. Layoffs happen every 6 months because mgmt can't plan properly and really doesn't understand the business or customers. The CEO is totally lost and always over promises and under delivers. Need to fire all of upper mgmt and the board of directors that believe the ridiculous operating plan every year and fail the investors and employees regularly. Lack of accountability all around in upper mgmt.

    Advice to Management

Either go to business school to learn how to run a business or fire yourself - because you have no idea how to run the business - when a company laysoff every 6 months, there are real issues at the top and lack of understanding of the business ...

    Pros

Having to chance to work with brilliant and creative people working together to cure cancer was life changing.

    Cons

Once Accuray acquired TomoTherapy the collaborative culture at TomoTherapy was completely wiped out. Accuray is a very top-heavy company which seemed to have little appreciation for the work of the talented and dedicated people that designed and built the TomoTherapy machine.

    Advice to Management

Have the Madison site be your main headquarters and reduce the headcount in Sunnyvale.

I worked at Accuray full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

In the Madison area, they pay better than the majority of other companies in the area. And their benefits are decent for the area as well.

    Cons

I can only speak for the Madison, WI office, so other locations might have a different opinion.

If you don't have a soul and you can look at the mirror everyday and know that you aren't working on a product that you can be proud of, you can survive here. And survive is probably the best word I can use. If you really care about helping cancer patients to get treatment they need or if you have some dignity, this isn't the place for you.

Almost all of the smart people from the TomoTherapy days are long gone. All you have left with are for the most part are people who are clinging on to their jobs because they have nowhere else to go.

Now for the good part of this review. They don't treat their employees very well, and they think that every employee is replaceable with someone right out of college or with a contractor. When you speak up about a problem you are called a complainer. They don't trust their employees at all. Managers expect you to work extra on impossible tasks that have impossible schedules. And if you are Madison, you can only rise to a certain level since all of the upper management comes from the headquarters in Sunnyvale, CA.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees. Treat them with some respect. Don't think that they are replaceable. Actually try to improve the product instead of slapping something together just to get it out the door.

I worked at Accuray (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Accuray / TomoTherapy both have innovative products with the cutting edge technology.

    Cons

Accuray is and has historically been entirely too top heavy. This company prides themselves with caring for their customers and the patients they treat...but have no appreciation for their employees and the level of expertise. Basically...you are a number and depending on your salary...you are expendable. Complete disappointment

    Advice to Management

You have destroyed the original mission and continue to discard valuable, long term, talented, and dedicated employees without any regard to the impact on the customers and or product development. My advice...cut at the top level and start taking care of those who actually work towards adding value to the development.

I worked at Accuray full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Cool technology and product – non-invasive treatment for cancers.

    Cons

Engineering organization has little ability to do original product development due to poor leadership, ignorance and political maneuvering. Bloated, bureaucratic middle management and ineffective business processes throughout the firm. Extreme short-term emphasis in decision making.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of half the people with VP, SVP, director or manager in their title and hold those who remain accountable. Revise bonus and option plan to improve incentives for long term performance of the firm.

I have been working at Accuray full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very cool technology: Accuray builds and sells a medical instrument that destroys cancer tumors.

    Cons

Poor company culture, inept senior management, low salaries. This company could be great, so it's just disappointing and frustrating that the management team can't make it grow and be successful. Lots of empire building (especially new CCO) and roadblocking between departments. Communication almost doesn't exist. Bloated management structure.

    Advice to Management

Resign! ... or wake up and look at the cold hard facts: you are not succeeding. Change starts at the top.
