I worked at Accuray full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great technology and plenty of smart, passionate employees.

    Cons

    - Choked by loads of ineffective, incompetent upper and middle management who perfectly demonstrate the Peter Principle.

    - Barebones work environment.

    - Lack of company culture.

    - Lack of recognition from management.

    Advice to Management

Cull the herd. There are far too many of you and you've had plenty of time to lead the company in the right direction, which you've almost impressively have sunk into the ground. Also, since there is no more manufacturing there, close the Sunnyvale offices.

    Pros

Very energetic and hard working team.
People do believe in what they are doing.
Salary is average for the function (service)

    Cons

Very poor life balance due to lake of resources
Career path are not foreseen as fair by most
Lake of recognition for management is not highly motivating

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent to employees - most of them are really doing their best to fulfill their mission to patients and users - they deserve such honesty

    Pros

Great products. Good vision for the company recently.

    Cons

One particular manager has a Napoleon complex that is going to sour prospective employees on remaining in the manufacturing arena of the company.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of those managers that practice blatant favoritism. Look into the exceptions to the company rules that are granted to a select few employees in manufacturing.

I worked at Accuray full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Had opportunity to work on some fun projects

    Cons

Overworked, undervalued, under-heard. Many functions working in silos.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your current employees before hiring consultants who can tell you the same thing. Make an attempt to retain employees who already know the company in order to fix what's wrong. Consider the idea that management may not have all of the answers.

    Pros

Accuray has good pay, great technology and product. There are some bright spots. Upper management recently realized they were screwing all departments in the product cycle that came after Engineering, and brought in outside help to point out a proper project management process. The CEO and some senior management are behind the push.

    Cons

The old guard still holds a lot of sway and is trying to slow meaningful progress. There is a lot of regression back to the old ways when anxiety gets high. There are, frankly, some ignorant bosses that peter-principled their way into Director and VP slots. They can be strangely and comically (if you don't report to them) paranoid, and insecure.

    Advice to Management

Get over the hump and into the new process. Stick to the transparent principles, and get a full set of skilled Project Management into place. There is still too much avoiding bringing important internal customers into the early conversations due to fear of having to consider their needs and "slowing things down".

    Pros

Intelligent people who deeply care about the product they provide. What could be more rewarding than helping patients with cancer.

    Cons

Poor management, uncompetitive pay, disorganized leadership.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to retain key people. Get a better HR team. Decide how you are going to gain a competitive advantage over your much more well established competitors.

I have been working at Accuray full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The passion for the products is what binds all colleagues together and provides a sense of pride for giving patients truly great cancer treatment options.

    Cons

Poor management from the top down. CEO has minimal to no accessibility, especially for a small company. Tactics are always changing and rarely line up to strategies. Sales globally have consistently lacked, causing budget/funding cuts from the bottom to make quarterly earnings. Lack of career growth- lots of Directors/VP's are hired, but long-term, dedicated employees rarely receive significant promotions. Low morale and poor culture.

    Advice to Management

Motivate/reward your employees properly. Hone in on lack of sales and rally the company's efforts to support the funnel. Build a personality for the company by nurturing a culture where people feel valued and heard.

Laid back enviroment, not much concern on whether you even show up for work on any given day. Just call in just before start time and inform management that you are not coming into work that day.

    Pros

high quality products that make a real difference in the quality of life for those fighting cancer

    Cons

senior management, senior management, senior management. They are inconsistent, act like they are infallible and individual contributors aren't of value. Hollow talk of 'best practices' while implementing confused, inefficient processes and tools while not listening to feedback because it doesn't fit their views.

    Advice to Management

good management earns respect, recognizes and rewards loyal employees at all levels. Arrogance and demanding respect while failing to appreciate currently committed employees will backfire. The majority of employees I know would not recommend Accuray as an employer despite a handsome referral program.
