I worked at Accuray full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great products that the employees are proud to be building.

    Cons

Very top heavy with managers at too many levels. Way too many managers that don't really contribute to the company's bottom line or add value to the products. The stock value is non-existent. This is very defeating for any employee that's trying to contribute to the overall success of the company.

    Advice to Management

Over 7 years now since buying TomoTherapy; something needs to change at the upper levels to make the company profitable. Senior people are leaving because of the lack of confidence and trust in management. Managers need to better communicate with the employees doing the real work everyday and respect their efforts. People can't work efficiently when all aspects of the business are in some form of chaos. The people in...

I worked at Accuray full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Collaborative environment, interesting products to work on, good work/life balance, great coworkers

    Cons

Organization is top heavy, retention issues - too much experience and talent going out the door. Came close to doubling my income by leaving.

    Advice to Management

Lean things out up top, invest more in keeping your experienced technicians, engineers, and software developers.

I have been working at Accuray full-time

    Pros

Many strong intelligent individual contributors. Weak processes so if you are willing to work VERY hard you will be rewarded.

    Cons

No direction from executive management Poorly managed resources and communication from top down Top heavy organization Employees who are strong see failures and move on while weak employees stay as they have no other options. Decisions for roadmap have no justification or ROI estimates. Employee burn out is rampant.

    Advice to Management

    Clean out

    I worked at Accuray

    Pros

Having to chance to work with brilliant and creative people working together to cure cancer was life changing.

    Cons

Once Accuray acquired TomoTherapy the collaborative culture at TomoTherapy was completely wiped out. Accuray is a very top-heavy company which seemed to have little appreciation for the work of the talented and dedicated people that designed and built the TomoTherapy machine.

    Advice to Management

Have the Madison site be your main headquarters and reduce the headcount in Sunnyvale.

I have been working at Accuray full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Donuts on Fridays. 50 cent snacks and beverages.

    Cons

Top heavy. Many VP's, mini VP, Directors, middle managers, managers, mini mangers, supervisors. Not enough normal employees.

    Advice to Management

Please get organized. Too many dead weight up top.

I worked at Accuray full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Exciting benefit to patients; Leading edge technology

    Cons

Top heavy; Post merger: hemorrhage of key founding talent; benefits reduced to lowest common denominator; Want loyalty - Get a dog

    Advice to Management

Bottom line is always important, but sometimes important to retain key core competencies

I worked at Accuray for more than 10 years

    Pros

Accuray / TomoTherapy both have innovative products with the cutting edge technology.

    Cons

Accuray is and has historically been entirely too top heavy. This company prides themselves with caring for their customers and the patients they treat...but have no appreciation for their employees and the level of expertise. Basically...you are a number and depending on your salary...you are expendable. Complete disappointment

    Advice to Management

You have destroyed the original mission and continue to discard valuable, long term, talented, and dedicated employees without any regard to the impact on the customers and or product development. My advice...cut at the top level and start taking care of those who actually work towards adding value to the development.

I have been working at Accuray

Good work life balance, motivated employees, technology makes a difference

      Advice to Management

Provide growth opportunities to individual contributors and augment development resources instead of continued upper management hires

      I worked at Accuray

      Pros

The technology is good, people are open and friendly. Their service organization stands out as one of the most level headed management teams I have seen. Sales and Marketing are a joke. Engineering has a lot of good people just mismanaged due to the absence of a real product roadmap. Manufacturing is still in the early 1900's.

      Cons

C-Level management is detached from employee base. Communication is poor to non-existent. Highly hierarchical culture where VP Level and above employees behave like they can get away with murder and almost always do. Extremely top heavy, when I left (Fall 2008) there was 1 executive (director level and above) for every 4 employees at the manager level and below. Lack of fundamental...

      Advice to Management

Recognize that the people who took the company public cannot manage it as a public company and will inevitably fail. The company needs to bring in professional managers and replace the people currently at the C-Level (CFO already gone, good start) and VP Level. Mid level management is actually OK, just too many of them.
