I worked at Ace Hardware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Local. Employee discount is fair. Good quality merchandise. Room to learn retail, customer service and merchandising. Regular customers are usually friendly and easygoing.

    Cons

Managers/owners are unprofessional and play favorites with employees. The owners' family members are employed there and are totally immature and aloof. Owners sit in their office and monitor employees all day via surveillance cameras, which makes for a very uncomfortable work day.

    Advice to Management

Owners ought to hire professional management and leave the job to them.

I worked at Ace Hardware full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The customers, they are the best.

    Cons

Work load, hours, people and how they treat you.

    Advice to Management

Don't wait to promote someone and then make sure you find every way to make sure they fail...not ok.

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are lucky enough to get hired into a department that pays incentive, and manage to be lucky enough to stay there, you can make extra money.

    Cons

You may get hired for a position in a specific department, and then forced into a completely different department with fewer opportunities and less desirable work conditions.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with your employees about what they can expect from the very beginning.

I worked at Ace Hardware (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working at ace is easy and mindless work, I quickly learned how to do all my job responsibilities and could almost do them in my sleep.

    Cons

This company clearly favors men in management and the compensation is mediocre.

    Advice to Management

My main gripe with Ace Hardware is the lack of adequate compensation for hard work. As a female working at ace for over 5 years, I left the company still making less than $10 an hour despite being the only female associate at my store cross-trained to do practically everything a manager can. In scheduling conflicts, managers play favorites and you'll probably end up working some days you desperately need off, i.e. I worked the day of my prom after requesting off a month in advance even though the other 5 girls who asked off did not have to come in at all. If you are a hard worker, prepare to be taken advantage of and walked all over.

I worked at Ace Hardware (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great chance to work directly with customers and with everyday products in a low pressure sales environment. Literally something for anybody to buy everyday.

    Cons

Repetitive sales events with the sames products. No input from sales associates and customers into new products. Low pay and inflexible scheduling for store management. Corporate culture seems fat, uneducated and out-of-date.

    Advice to Management

Develop and encourage degree-ed, experienced staff rather than watching them leave.

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back, no stress over getting things done

    Cons

Store looks terrible in everyone I have seen in the district. Just worried about the money. Old systems. No defined roles and training is done by yourself even though book tells the mentor to do things. Not sure I fit the ace model because most retailers I have worked for set the standards so high that working for ace drives me crazy.

    Advice to Management

Relaxed is ok but need to focus on getting processes done. From truck to cleaning and recovering the sales floor need to be a focus. Stores look more like going out of business than ready to build a future.
