I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are lucky enough to get hired into a department that pays incentive, and manage to be lucky enough to stay there, you can make extra money.

    Cons

You may get hired for a position in a specific department, and then forced into a completely different department with fewer opportunities and less desirable work conditions.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with your employees about what they can expect from the very beginning.

I worked at Ace Hardware part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees are all very friendly, and fun to work with

It's a very relaxed work environment

Managers occasionally bring in food or buy snacks for all the employees

10% discount when you use your house account.

Very thorough training and support from senior staff to teach you the ropes, great first job.

    Cons

The manager quality varies a lot, there's some really good managers, and managers everyone hates.

When I was hired, I felt taken advantage of, because this was my first job. The head manager got me to agree to 7.25 dollars per hour, which is below Minnesota minimum wage.

I worked at Ace Hardware (More than a year)

    Pros

Some managers are very nice and a pleasure to be around

    Cons

    - The owner is a goddamn miser and the way that he bosses people around is both terrifying and hilarious

    - The owner also needs to be able to contain his anger issues

    - Awful scheduling. The person in charge of scheduling is the worst I've ever seen.

    Advice to Management

Make Mark (the owner) retire (if he hasn't already) and never let him come back for the sake of all of the wide-eyed, optimistic people that are looking for a nice and welcoming first job. Treat the stockpeople better if you want to have them around.

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

When wages go up for example at Lowes or Home Depot everyones gets a pay increase. For the franchise I work if you have been there a year you get a birthday bonus check and christmas bonus check. Store open hours are great for anyone with any type of life schedule.

    Cons

Customers can treat you badly and they can complain to the corporate office and when they do they get gift cards and free merchandise after threatening to write bad reviews about us. Customers always right just got to take what they do to you! But there are w always really kind ones that come along and make you feel wanted to make up for the mean ones.

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Freedom to help and resolve any customer service issues that may arise. Really able to create your own shop without too many "rules".

    Cons

For the amount of work involved relatively low paying. Not for the faint of heart or needing hand holding. Working outside all year is very difficult. Not enough recognition or encouragement.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent about what you pay. You lose great people.

I worked at Ace Hardware full-time

    Pros

Everyone was super friendly and all of the workers were very tight knit. You really get to know people in the community.

    Cons

There is a lot of knowledge to gain in order to help customers and it is sometimes difficult to master all the things there are to know about hardware.

    Advice to Management

Keep up lots of good training opportunities for employees and let them gain an area of expertise. This is already done, but is a point of success that should be continued.

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

cannot think of a single reason that makes getting up for work worth it

    Cons

    - old equipment
    - dirty & dusty
    - management is rude and does not value its employees
    - mandatory overtime and only one day off
    - work is not worth the pay, and they cheat you out of hours on your time cards consistently

    Advice to Management

Realize what you have! Give your people a break, we are sick of working 10-12 hour days, and then having to come in on our day off to work another 8 hour shift. Pay your employees more and they will be willing to do more for you.
