I worked at Acme Brick full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stable employer, but hours are long and the pay is short. Most of the benefits have been eliminated such as the pension plan... gone. Annual raises come about every 18-24 months and are only 1%.

    Cons

Fixed raises of 1% for the last 6 years, no chance for promotion, no future, systematic elimination of benefits, large insurance premium increases each year more than offset the 1% raise decreasing the overall take home pay each year. Every one that can has retired.

    Advice to Management

Listen to some of the suggestions from the dozen of employee surveys you have taken and implement some changes

I worked at Acme Brick full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Beautiful corporate HQ building, strong history and tradition, well known company with strong brand of excellence, and many kind and friendly coworkers across different departments (feels very much like a family).

    Cons

Only some appreciation for new or innovative thinking; fairly flat organization so there is some freedom in decision making but could be more; some "good ol'boy network" issues that's based too much on relationships vs. performance/results.

    Advice to Management

Start thinking about how you are bringing in new talent and allowing them to make their mark on the company and grow it for the future; can't just "do what we've always done" for much longer. Don't retain leaders that don't truly live the values of the organization; they hurt productivity and results.

I worked at Acme Brick for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pension plan still active for current employees, however, no longer a benefit for new employees. 401K with (minimal) company matching. Company team building incentives.

    Cons

No room for advancement if you are not a "good ol' boy", meaning if you are a woman, a minority, or if you are not related to or a friend of a manager you will be stuck in the same job for years. They think a brand new degree matters more than 15+ years experience in the industry without a degree. If you're lucky enough to make it to management you get a free car/truck, free gas, and absolutely no need to track... your vacation or sick time, which, when the company is giving only 1% raisies (across the board, regardless of how much or how little you work) because they are in an "economic slump", doesn't help morale.

    Advice to Management

If you want to reduce costs start with the managers who are driving company vehicles, and putting in gas with company credit cards just to drive to and from home. If they drive to a job, let them use their personal vehicle and exepnse it out. I guarantee it will save the company hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

I worked at Acme Brick full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Family like atmosphere; Christian values; People helping people. The "old school" pension plan somewhat makes-up for the lack of other benefits.

    Cons

"Pay grades" are few, raises are small (tied to housing and construction) and insurance benefits are mediocre

    Advice to Management

I worked for the Director of IT and would be terribly saddened if he changed anything about the way he manages his people.

    Cons

Not many however economy is somewhat slow. Would like to see a better marketing department. Some of the samples are slightly below average.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, the economy will pick up eventually.
