    Pros

Opportunity to gain experience if you have none

    Cons

Run by mostly under 35s who have very little experience. They don't take safety seriously. Very few structures in place when things start to go wrong (both at a security and program level)

    I worked at Acted full-time

    Pros

Great place to get a foot in the door as a recent graduate.

    Cons

I worked for ACTED for about 1 year in the field as was troubled by their lack of strategy, corruption, and unqualified international staff.

Chasing money, unethical development philosophy, lack of psychological care for staff, overworking is the expectation

    Advice to Management

Start all over again from scratch, the whole thing is rotten

I have been working at Acted (More than a year)

    Pros

This is a definite in for new people looking at the humanitarian sector. You get a lot of responsibility and have the opportunity to pursue projects that interest you. Also, easy to move laterally into other departments, not siloed.

    Cons

With a lot of responsibility comes a lot of work. ACTED ethos is when there is something to do, you should have the motivation to do it. Often hire inexperienced people and always the youngest in the meeting with donors/partners, etc...

I worked at Acted full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

High amount of opportunities to get a foot in the door in the sector given their geographic spread and turnover of staff. The management system on paper is quite sound (but unfortunately they can not implement).

    Cons

Shockingly poor senior and strategic management. No accountability for donor funding and inexperienced project level management. systemic leadership issues from the top down. Very surprised at the total failure of a seemingly sound management system. No strong management figures.

    Advice to Management

Bring in some corporates with humanitarian ethos to change the organizational culture, which would mean removing the founders and senior management teams, replacing them with non-sociopaths. Have never seen such a large organization so appallingly managed.

I worked at Acted (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn and develop and push yourself beyond your limits.
Potential and capacity take advantage over age or experience.
Great values at field level - alleviating suffering and providing help to the ones in need have been the main focus across 3 countries that I have worked with ACTED.

    Cons

The recruitment process is rather lengthy, leaving field teams highly understaffed at times. Long hours and weekends at work tend to become the norm rather than the exception, in many places. The overstretch generated, over my stay with ACTED, a pretty high turnover rate among expatriate staff.

    Advice to Management

Speed up the recruitment process and ensure a better work-life balance. More effort should be put into retention practices.
