I worked at Action for Children (UK) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Able to work in your own home.
    Good training protocol.
Decent pay compared to other fostering agencies.
Good support network from other carers

    Cons

Lack of support during challenging times.
Encouraged to stick with placements that were no longer working.
Complaints procedure long and drawn out.

    Advice to Management

Train to ensure all staff members are consistent in all situations.
Listen to your carers. They are supposed to be 'professional' foster carers and are doing a job you've most likely never done.

    Pros

From day one of moving from the Local Authority, into working for Action for Children the difference was noticed immediately. Much emphasis was placed on staff safety and welfare (something which I had not experienced before!) - a mobile phone was given, we had to detail which homes we were visiting and an approximate finish time so the admin staff knew when we should call in by. If no call was received then the admin staff acted on this immediately. My work always received high praise and appreciation (again, this is something which frequently went unnoticed by LA) Monthly supervision sessions really did take place monthly (or sooner if requested) and feedback questions were always followed up and responded to. Regular Team Days took place so that all of the cluster centre staff could meet up too.

    Cons

Undergoing restructure and pay awards pending. The moulding of the new services ongoing, since local LA budget cuts is uncertain - which causes nervousness amongst the staff who fear for their jobs (permanent staff)

    Advice to Management

Follow up and respond to any actions or queries staff raise - and maintain the already good, open two way conversations with front line staff

I have been working at Action for Children (UK) part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Making a difference to the families we work with
The smiles on the children's faces when they come into creche
The amazing people I work with
I could go on for ever

    Cons

The constant uncertainty about funding so our fantastic project can continue
Worrying about the children during school holiday breaks - this is more than outweighed when we return to groups after the break

    Advice to Management

Make time to visit the frontline services to see what a difference we are making every day. The difference may not seem like a big deal but to some families it is huge

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Action for Children (UK) full-time

    Pros

Some great staff working their hearts out for little reward.

    Cons

Pay those that do the work 17-22k for social worker levels of responsibility whilst managers get paid 50k. At times pressure to meet targets means practice is unsafe. Very little money raised is actually spent on children and is recouped into main budgets.

    Advice to Management

    Change before you ae exposed
