    I worked at Actuant full-time

    Pros

Hard working employees. Success and improvement is supported at the site level.

    Cons

No investment in systems to help Operations improve performance although improvement is expected and closely measured.

    Advice to Management

Listen to middle and local management recommendations and put some profit back into the sites that make it happen. I left because you wouldn't.

    Pros

down-to-Earth and hardworking bunch of folks (overall); some people have been with the company their entire careers; interesting products and diverse business units; some people are truly dedicated to making the company a better place.

    Cons

3 CEOs in 3 years; management leads thru fear and intimidation; routinely pays below market and fails to deliver on bonus promises; HR team needs significant improvement from the top down; fitness center at the corporate building costs money to use; even when people don't get bonuses they are pressured to donate to UPAF and United Way.

    Advice to Management

Employee engagement would improve significantly if leaders treated people with dignity and respect. HR team needs to be upgraded with individuals who have more experience and have a higher degree of professionalism. The current atmosphere is toxic.

    Pros

Company will provide a lot of opportunity for personal growth. Individuals performing the work are not always given credit. Solid place to begin a career.

    Cons

There is a lot of turnover. Quarter driven business whose highest priority is cash flow. You will learn about how to deliver results. If you do not deliver your employment will be terminated.

    Advice to Management

Given the amount of turnover presents an opportunity to ask themselves why. What is it about the company culture that creates so many short term employees is a question worth answering.

I worked at Actuant full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

As a lean organization, there is plenty of opportunity to get involved in projects and processes that you would not normally have a chance to experience. One year of experience at the company can equal two or three years at a different organization.

    Cons

Sometimes you have to do your own job and one or two other people's as there are always openings. There is not a lot of work/life balance, and the pay and benefits are not very competitive.

    Advice to Management

Be genuine. It does not feel like you actually care about your employees. The company is results-driven but its the people that help meet those goals and that is not acknowledged as often as it should be.

I worked at Actuant full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of the employees are very friendly. Management is very approachable and will take the time to meet with you if you ask. The company has a great global presence.

    Cons

The vision of the company is flawed. There is no focus on making a difference in the world. The vision of the company is to double the company every 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Management should spend more resources on developing and engaging their people instead of acquiring other businesses and integrating them into the company.

I worked at Actuant full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very intelligent individuals work for the company

    Cons

Poor culture, poor management/leadership, lack of opportunities for growth within the company. Honestly this list can go on forever.

    Advice to Management

Sell the business units off and allow new leadership to take over. Need to focus more on employee satisfaction, designing products that can keep up with the times and maintain diverse and young talent so the business can sustain.

    I worked at Actuant full-time

    Pros

A lot of off-site training. Intern program is great, move between business units and learn a great deal about the inner workings of each as well as Actuant.

    Cons

While continuous improvement is a constant profits are the reason. This is at the expense of the employees who end up becoming workaholics to maintain their jobs. They are quick to decide that people must be let go especially right before quarterly reporting to the Board. The higher paid pre-Actuant employees are let go for companies purchased. I don't mean management alone, the mid-management and long time workers.

    Advice to Management

They are not open to advice unless you can show at least a 50k gain in profits.

I worked at Actuant full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, reasonable bonus program, and good benefits

    Cons

Very narrow scope thinking - everything was focused on cost reduction and not quality or customer service. Also, the over-riding sense was that even though they had bought a very successful company, everything that had been done in the past was wrong - the corporate entity was all-knowing and their way was the only way.

    Advice to Management

When you buy a successful company, spend just as much time studying what made them successful as you do telling them how everything should be done. And also, become aware of the fact that low-cost country sourcing is not always the best answer to every question.

    Pros

There are still some talented employees.

    Cons

Long meetings and rewards for "face time."

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better or you will not be able to find quality employees when the labor market improves.
