    Pros

    It was a fun group of employees and the company had a solid product. The job was low-stress. The company had fun outings and events.

    Cons

    No career path for Sales Development. Very hard to transition into another role. Management team was hit or miss. Some managers in certain departments were great while others were miserable. Because a huge amount of employees sat together in the same room, it was at times a very intimidating work environment and extremely competitive.

    Advice to Management

    Managers need to be more involved with their team. The manager needs to be more invested with coaching and less focused on metrics/numbers.

    Pros

    Lots of wonderful people, with great technology; they are a big part of one of the coolest Open Source BI projects out there (BIRT). Pay is competitive and sales environment is fast paced. Lots of opportunities to grow your technical skills in Business Intelligence, embedded BI, analytics, and more.

    Cons

    Opportunities for advancement are often limited, and there does not seem to be much real investment being made in their employees' professional growth. Enterprise reporting is a rapidly shrinking market segment, and Actuate's expansion out of that space will have to compete with many other vendors.

    Advice to Management

    Greater investment in people will likely yield much greater results, though some serious investment in application development is certainly warranted. Focus less on marketing and branding and more on delivering real solutions. While BIRT is still a very viable Open Source application it may be too cumbersome when compared with other enterprise solutions, especially in the Big Data and Analytics spaces.

    Pros

    Intelligent, kind, and fun people. There was always a place to ask questions. Great food trucks that would show up every week.

    Cons

    Language barrier between some of the employees that worked there, disorganized and lack of direction for the interns you were basically on your own.

    Advice to Management

    No longer matters as the company as now been acquired by a new parent company.

    Pros

    Friendly and smart people (for the most part), beautiful workspaces at HQ. Interesting, powerful products that can do amazing things (but it can take brains and time to make that happen, making sales challenging).

    Cons

    Actuate products are complex, and the three product lines/lines of business were never truly integrated. So much of the business wasn't integrated either. Knowledge in one area wasn't always valuable in others.

    Former employees who have left recently have reported large bumps in pay at their new jobs, so salaries may not be keeping pace.

    Advice to Management

    Lots of employees are nervous right now. The OpenText acquisition represents an opportunity for the former Actuate and its employees. But strategy and direction needs to be more clearly articulated. Right now it seems like Waterloo is asking for Actuate to lead itself, but not giving feedback on direction/or and telling us that our choices will be supported. For a company (OT) that has done a lot of acquisitions, I expected a smoother process.
