Dangerous workplace with poor training and unorganized management
Jul 18, 2021 - Direct Care Worker in Marquette, MIRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Coworkers tend to be caring individuals Some downtime during shifts
Cons
As a care worker I worked in a home with residents who had documented histories of violence. The first time I was assaulted by a resident, albeit relatively gently, I was unable to do anything but try to walk away because management had not bothered to schedule me for the company's physical intervention training for the first several weeks I was working there. First aid and CPR training consisted of a two hour training session that was split between the trainer telling us stories about their experiences in the homes and the trainer flipping through the training manual and summarizing what they thought was important. No training manuals or other training materials were provided to the staff attending the training. There was no practice or demonstration of any CPR or first aid during the training. Much of the other training required by the company consisted of reading scripts that were clearly intended for instructors of training sessions. Many of the scripts actually contained wording indicating that were where not to be handed out to read for the training. At least one of the scripts indicated it had not been updated since 1997 or so.

Pros
Helping consumers with ADL's, learning about their likes and dislikes. Absolutely the best part of working for ALS UP is the consumers, whether you are having a rough day and go to work the moment you step in the door everybody usually cheering clapping and super excited to see you. That is one of the things that made this job worth it, even through difficult times during your shift.b
Cons
Management was terrible. Alot of coworkers were talked down on, and not talked to. Sometimes they pick and choose which employee is "better" and treat the ones they dislike terribly. Got screamed at while on site in the home from management I told upper management about what was said and the result was "if that even happened" I got screwed out of my vacation hours I earned, because there was no notice given, but other former employees who didn't give a notice indeed received their Etime hours they had accumulated in a last check, got screwed out of the large bonus that everybody received a little less than a week after I left. When you're told you aren't wanted or needed by management why give a notice? Especially when nothing will or had been done. No room for advancement/career growth. Company expects you to put yourself and your family last to the company, can't take care of a sick young child while being a single parent, but management sure can take time for their families and themselves. And expected to work 14hours unless you're a midnight staff. But that's just in one county of the company can't say what rest of the company is like. But there are a couple wonderful home managers that are wonderful people and managers and care about their staff.
