I worked at Advance Auto Parts full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved helping customers find solutions to their problems or suggesting maintenance procedures to avoid having future problems.

    Cons

Company relies way to much on salaried employees. No overtime for hourly employees, strictly scheduled store hours with no leeway. They saved over 26k by not having to pay me for all the free overtime hours I worked at the store. I got tired of working evenings, holidays, and weekends, giving up days off for company mandated activities. And manager schedule requirements that provided no opportunity for any sort of social life or outside activities. Close Friday, Open Saturday, and sleep most of Sunday to make up for the lack of sleep the night before. Five 10 hour per day minimum shifts, Nope you can't work Four 11s and a 6. or Four 12s and a 4. .

    Advice to Management

Make up your mind. Decide what's important. do you want us to make our numbers and keep the customers happy, or do you want us to maintain employee hours?.

I worked at Advance Auto Parts part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people! Regular customers, co-workers, and direct management were great people to work with. Very accommodating to my class schedule.

    Cons

PAY! Public perception of what this type of position pays is just not reality. You would imagine that a person whom is expected to help a customer figure out what is possibly wrong with their car would get paid more for specialized knowledge. The pay is just over minimum wage! Upper management wants the team to care, as long as they don't have to pay them for it. Since many of the employees also work on cars on the side, they do their best to help the customer. They just don't make what they are worth.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the original parts store mentality. take pride in knowledgeable employees and pay them! Quit focussing on being the auto parts version of Wal-mart!

    Pros

There are some good co-workers that I'm glad I met. When gone I'll still stay in contact with them.

    Cons

When a person get hired off the street with NO experience for a position that you wanted in the BOSS gives him over $3 more then he offered you...but then expect you to train him.

    Advice to Management

Someone from corporate should do a "UNDERCOVER BOSS" that way you'll know 1st hand whats going on at your company. No teamwork, disrespectful to customers & employees. It's NOT cool to play with people money just because your the BOSS & they made u mad.

    Pros

Employee discount, easy to relocate, flexible hours.

    Cons

Very low pay, management is more focused on how you answer phone and if you upsaled customer than providing training to develop employees knowledge, little room for advancement as far as pay goes so it was hard to get or retain associates with any automotive knowledge

    Advice to Management

Increase pay to get knowledgeable associates so customers can actually trust your employees and they will return
