I worked at Advantest full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

High technology products and working with the leading semiconductor manufacturers.
Established company with deep pockets to invest.

    Cons

Still recovering from the difficulties of the Verigy acquisition.
Pushing out many of the employees responsible for Advantest's last decade of big profits.
No clear direction to invest for growth, while simultaneously facing stagnation in historical market.

    Advice to Management

Top management should not be a glorified sales role. Delegate the sales and spend more time actually being aware of what the teams are doing and managing ways to make the company more productive.

I have been working at Advantest full-time

    Pros

Good pay, lots of autonomy. Tasks are dispatched usually work indepentantly/ alone.

    Cons

Lack of documents, procedures, diagrams. Development tool installation, there is always some part of the task to figure out and document.

    Advice to Management

Good leadership, work balance sometimes mismatched. Support systems are remote, but always timely response. Overall ideal if you like working mainly solo amongst a team.

I have been working at Advantest full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good products (portfolio should be reduced though)
Excellent peers - the majority is always willing to help, assist and make you learn (even if you make mistakes!)
Very interesting mixture of HW, SW and services, and customers.
Salary, bonuses and benefits are quite good, I think.
As a Japanese company, your job is quite save

    Cons

Very poor lover and middle management.
       - Has poor soft skills (believes it did something very good if they ok'ed you working from home while you or our kid doesn't feel well).
       - Do not develop people well.
       - Too much dependency on direct superior when it comes to distribution of benefits and bonuses, personal/career development.
       - Annual performance appraisal is very objective to the superior's view/expectations (which he may or may not share with you - till the appraisal...)
    Poor career opportunities.
Fixed ratio of job levels that must be met in EU (guideline from the mother in JP)
Very big overhead (headcount) and slow processes (bureaucracy).
Most higher management positions are occupied by Japanese people, and they shifted around rather then put the better person in place.
    Slow in innovations.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the WW overhead (headcount, bureaucracy and number of redundant products)!
Train your lover and middle management to motivate people.
Become a true global player, also within the higher management, there are people who suit better to positions as most of your Japanese buddies.
Don't just expect that everyone is doing 120% as default to get 100% payed, and don't ask for even more!

    Pros

-A great company that looks out for its employees.
    -Benefits are good.
-As an applications engineer you get to work with different clients and learn different techniques and skills along the way.
-Its a very stable company and hence a very stable job. Very few lay offs
-I have yet to meet a rude person while working here
-Bonuses are hit or miss. But when they hit they are pretty good
-Easy to manage work life balance (mostly)
    -Lots of very experienced people
    -Becoming an expert at testing

    Cons

    -Advancing is a slow crawl.
-Getting more than a 1% or 2% raise is very difficult
-Unless you are supporting a superstar customer it is hard to get recognition for doing great work.
-I've met a couple lazy/incompetent engineers who seem to try to do the minimum amount of work for the customers.
