I have been working at Aera Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work life balance, work schedule, company culture, coworkers, good training program within first few years of employment, community outreach program

    Cons

Nepotism, sustainability, negative future outlook, poor management promotions, poor performance management process, risk-adverse, unmarketable after several years of working same field, lack of SMEs and technical mentoring KT

    Advice to Management

    Stop promoting inexperienced females prematurely

I worked at Aera Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great salary, challenging, great colleagues who are willing to help. Field positions allow immediate access to fun and challenging engineering issues.

    Cons

Industry down-turn has hurt company morale, no longer an employee-focused organization. Field work is a long drive from the nearest city.

    Advice to Management

Return to the great, employee-centric company you once were.

I worked at Aera Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Owned by Exxonmobil and Shell which gives a lot of financial strength
    Good reserve base to exploit
    Lots of experienced employees

    Advice to Management

Hiring more and more public relations people won't help.

I have been working at Aera Energy (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and decent salaries. Aera was once a good company to work for, but when the going got tough, management decided to fend for themselves.

    Cons

Baby boomers watch out. You will all be gone soon. WF and WM get the promotions. If you are an attractive WF in 30's you will go far if you want to play "the game".
Sneaky and engages in borderline legal activities. Let the Hunger Games begin and may the odds be ever in your favor.

    Advice to Management

Management should be forced rated just like the employees are and suffer the consequences of a low rating

I worked at Aera Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, and some very nice and competent people. Work is not too hard in most roles and the onsite gym is great for a workout.

    Cons

A controlling organization that doesn't allow for individual growth in many cases. Not sure how long the no-to-limited-growth business model will support the size of the staff and get the support of the owners (Shell and Exxon). Before the reorg I think this was clearly a better place to work than main competitors (CRC, CVX) - but I don't think that is the case any longer. Longer term opportunities may not develop for those early in their careers, but the skills should be transferable to other organizations within and outside of California.

    Advice to Management

    hmmmmmmmm.....

I have been working at Aera Energy (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This company really takes care of it's employees. Salaried get 4 weeks vacation to start. On site gym, nurse, and massage. Great mentoring, if you take the initiative.

    Cons

Cultural fit may be an issue. Very much and "good old boy" culture. Yearly reviews the only feedback.

    Advice to Management

Keep in better touch with employees, do better onboarding.

I worked at Aera Energy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, good salary and benefits. Very flat organization, can be pro and con.

    Cons

Flat organization limits vertical mobility and managerial flexibility. Oil outlook not great at the moment.

I have been working at Aera Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Money, some of the people, challenging work if you make it that way, hands on experience, benefits are unbeatable, and responsible when it comes to environmental regs

    Cons

Location... Bakersfield can be like a black hole that swallows you up and the pay makes it hard to leave, some of the people and their attitudes are unchangeable

    Advice to Management

More of a buddy system then performance based system

I have been working at Aera Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For technical employees, the pay and benefits are very good. Vacation, 401K, Bonus, etc. If you work for Aera, you will not be transferred out of California. Aera is a California company and has operations only in California. This is advantageous if you have family and do not want to move or really enjoy Bakersfield.

    Cons

The company is going through a painful reorganization/ layoffs and there is a huge amount of confusion as to what the new organization is going to look like. This confusion has led to decreased morale and a lack of engagement from the employees.

Vertical movement in the company is near impossible. The company structure is flat with three levels between engineers and management.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your ivory towers and really listen to your employees. There is a significant lack of trust between senior management and their underlings.

Learn how to speak to the millennials. Much of the company is in the millennial age range and the company is tone deaf to what they want and need for job satisfaction.
