I have been working at Aerojet Rocketdyne full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Self guided work. Little management oversight assuming you don't need it. Good vacation time, payed holiday shutdown Christmas to New Years, 9-80 schedule.

    Cons

Not the most efficient organization. Trying to accomplish simple tasks can be challenging if you don’t know the right paths.

    Advice to Management

Focus on core business needs such as cash flow, employee carrier development, simplifying processes instead of complicating

I have been working at Aerojet Rocketdyne full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I'm a space enthusiast so I was so excited at first to be working on space products. Given the opportunity to learn about rocket thrusters was very rewarding.

    Cons

I was told "we can't have engineers doing what they want". That should have so been a red flag. If you want to use innovation to improve products, you won't being doing it there. If you want to design new, modern space products, you won't. The product designs ended in the 80's and 90's so the "engineering" work is just testing and making reports to customers. This work involves massive paperwork so that we look professional because, you know, lots of paperwork and reports look "professional". There are several middle managers who seem to depressed about their life and work because they often get rude, insulting and angry. Especially if you tell them you have an idea to improve the products. Sad, because they have the manufacturing base, equipment, and customer links to move forward to new a future of modern products. But, because of the stick-in-the-mud culture, I don't think this will ever happen. Maybe it will for their competitors in Denver but, not here.

I have been working at Aerojet Rocketdyne full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

9/80 work week, 9/80 work week, 9/80 work week! Close distance to Folsom, a nice place to live.

    Cons

Defense budgets are at an all time low. Rocket industry being outsourced to Russia (Putin working hard to change that). Budget cuts and recent layoffs have lead to understaffing and many unpaid overtime working hours during the week. Moral is poor right now.

    Advice to Management

    Rocketdyne merger -- really?!?

I worked at Aerojet Rocketdyne full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay for the area was reasonable and the products that the company worked on were very interesting. A number of their products were in support of critical civilian and DoD missions.

    Cons

The lack of a diversified work experience base in the management ranks resulted in a very "this is the way we have always done it" culture. Also, a lot of activities had to be repeated either because of entrance and exit criteria for the activity as we as the lack of quality data and proper reviewers.

    Advice to Management

More time should be spent on developing a diversified management team with other work experiences outside the company to bring different perspectives and best practices to bear on their activities.

    Pros

    Reasonable hours and Good location.

    Cons

No retirement plan, inability of management to control programs, little oppertunity for advancement

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to how your lower level managers are handling their support of pragrams. PMO is running wild and ignoring company procedures and guidlines and the managers are affraid to stand up and do anything about it. This creates ambiguity and reduces productivity.

    Pros

office is close to home. boss looking over shoulder is very rare. office environment is good.

    Cons

lack of communication, no work standards. nitpicking drafting department.

    Advice to Management

give new hires more indoctrination on aerojet's ways of doing things. provide long term assignments, not jobs lasting two days or two hours.
