    Challenging and sometimes overwhelming

    Pros

I started with Aetna 10 years ago after losing my job in construction. So the first pro is they gave me the opportunity to work for them with no obvious experience in the health care industry. I worked through customer service on the phones and then applied to claims processing and am now an analyst. The 2nd pro would be the freedom to transfer to other areas of the business, assuming you possess some aptitude for the job you are applying for. The pay has always been decent and you get all of the standard benefits like 401k, dental, eye and health.

    Cons

Oddly enough working for a health insurance company doesn't mean the best health insurance prices. Lol, so don't be surprised when you find out your insurance isn't free. Although, there are many health programs you can enroll in to get credits toward your premiums. There seems to be a high turnover rate for management so you are often exposed to a couple different management styles even within a year. My current position has me working on a pretty complex processing program and I often feel a lack of support (it doesn't help that I have been through 12 managers within a 2 year period). I have to say, I'm not to excited about the exclusive employee engagement groups. Sure, you can join in with them but you are kind of excluded when you don't line up with the cultures or creeds of the of the groups that are available in that you don't fit in.

Overall a good place to work

    Pros

Overall there were a lot of incentive programs, the benefits were good, apart from the health plans, and the pay in my opinion was great

    Cons

The health plans are terrible when you consider you're working for the insurance company! They were very cheap, but high deductible so it costs you more in the long run if you go to the doc a lot or have a newborn who is seen often.

    Great career job

    Pros

Aetna is very good at work/life balance, the work is challenging and allows continuous learning, the benefits and holidays are competitive . They provide 401K and ESPP to help plan for the future. Their wellness package provides a very comprehensive stress management benefit that is beyond industry standards. Very big on activity related competitions with logging of exercise, meals, stress management time. Good opportunities for advancement. Also, many positions are work from home.

    Cons

The health and dental insurances are very expensive with mediocre benefits 80/20 with min 1000 deductible. As a healthcare company, it would be nice to provide premium benefits to their employees. They do have a tenancy to have layoffs every other year in one division or another. With 48,000 employees this is expected but not fun to wonder which department will be hit.

This company is too large and is very impersonal.

    Pros

Management appreciates hard work and will promote employees who can keep up with the workload and get good audit scores. Decent salary, and good PTO.. although you can't take PTO unexpectedly without getting an "occurrence" if you are an hourly employee.

    Cons

There are several things I do not like about this company. Like most companies with a claims department, the workload is unmanageable in a 40 hour work week. The expectations are very high, and so is the stress level. Also, the disability benefit managers are hourly, which is unheard of in this industry. This means you cannot work even 15 minutes beyond your normal schedule without getting permission because this will be considered overtime pay. Because the disability benefit managers are hourly, they are subject to a different attendance policy than the salaried employees. Hourly employees get 'occurrences' any time they are unexpectedly absent. If you get 4-5 occurrences in a rolling 12 month period, you can be put on probation. Therefore, I would not recommend this company to single parents, or parents of young children who are frequently ill. Additionally, the work space is not private. People sit in 'quads' of 4 people and are almost completely open to one another with low cube walls. This is a very distracting work environment and can be very unprofessional when you are on the phone and it is very noisy in your work area. The health benefits are very poor for a primarily health insurance company with a very high deductible health plan with a health savings account.

    Pros

Good work life balance if in the correct areas.

    Cons

Terrible Insurance. It says something about a company when they offer their employees only the worst products they have to offer. Most married employees are on their spouses plans. For a health insurance company that is pathetic and generally sets the tone for how Aetna feels about their employees

Great Company, great leaders, good benefits

    Pros

Working at Aetna was a great experience. Leadership in my department was great with communicating 'why' behind each job we performed. Management was great at focusing on the big picture and each employee knew how they fit into the company. Great opportunities to develop and hone skills. For a health insurance company the benefits were good but could have been better from a Medical ins. coverage perspective. I'd definitely come back to the company in the future.

    Cons

Transparency and communication needs improve and yearly layoffs created seasonal job insecurity throughout the company

    Pros

    Cons

Why are health insurance benefits not great when working for a health insurance company?! All my friends at tech companies have better health benefits
