I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None that I can think of, Human Resources supported and defended discrimination, not the rights and benefit of employees.

    Cons

Although employees outside of IT seemed satisfied with their jobs, IT department was the worst job I've ever had. Management, all the way up to CIO, was the most incompetent, dishonest group of people I have ever worked for. If you're looking for a job where you're micro-managed, unappreciated, and treated differently based on your race, this is (was) the place for you. Hope it's changed.

    Advice to Management

Watch your management, interview existing employees to (anonymously) audit the activities of dishonest managers and terminate them. Investigate kickbacks from consulting firms.

I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility with regard to hours worked.
    Health benefit cost is low.
Fairly good lunch program, $5 per day.
    Friendly coworkers.

    Cons

    Comparably very low wages.
    Lack of opportunity for advancement.
    Heavy workload.
    Management not transparent.
    Poor communication from management.
"What have you done for us lately" attitude from management.
Promotions and pay increases are tight to a very bureaucratic and red taped HR system.
Pay increases are only given once per year and are very limited.
    Outdated equipment and machinery.
    Almost non existent R&D.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more because the cost of living in Santa Clara is extremely high. Replace lost talent instead of expecting others to pick up work load permanently. Promote based on merit and not director favoritism.

I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Need to find out if there is any I am sure it will take years to find out

    Cons

Outdated product lines with zero or no investment on new products and R&D. Management is not smart enough to draw vision and roadmap for company. More on experimental mode, trying to survive in market. Growth numbers are created by cutting the resources and layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Introduce new products and don't just dependent on old technology.

I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Sustaining company, ample freedom at work, great colleague.

    Cons

The company management simply don't have any direction.
The company lose focus on the market needs and focus on what they think the market might needs.
Too many VPs and management staff make it hard to steer to the right direction.
The marketing guys are sleeping, where is the sales??
No advancement opportunities in career or training.
    Terrible management staff.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the micro array product and find out what is the other products that our customer needs. Put all the strength, manpower, resources in it.
Shift the company out of Singapore, they are not helping us in cost saving. Frank, the loading is not high now. So perhaps it's time we start small again here in US, our own country. Can you believe how many manager and director in Singapore site? Is there really a cost save??
Marketing and sales staff really need to work harder, is anyone monitoring the situation??

    Pros

The market is great, too bad internally everyone knows there are serious problems and for some reason they don't address it, scary

    Cons

Marketing leadership is obsessed with details that have no relavance.
Internal employees know they have serious problems and the attitude is, not my job, weird.
Marketing Management should be reviewed and possibly replaced.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of Marketing leadership and fix your products and prove your place in the market.

  7. "Like working on the Titanic"

    Pros

They have interesting technology, pay fairly well and have good benefits

    Cons

Technology is rapidly becoming outdated. Management has no real long term plan or goals (other than to make more money). Management is extremely short-sighted and too narrow-minded. I've never had more meetings at any other company I've worked for.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to decide what they want to be when they grow up and implement a plan to get there. There is no point in a company of about 1000 employees having 40+ VP's. Teams are too large to be effective.
