I have been working at Affymetrix as a contractor

    Pros

Good work life balance existed till the company got acquired.

    Cons

Middle management should be thoroughly evaluated to see if they have the necessary experience to be managers and not appointed for all the wrong reasons or else this causes loss of morality in the employees working under them creating a toxic environment with less focus on productivity. Recently, two of our team members left due to the unhealthy environment.

    Advice to Management

Try to be respectful of people who actually "do" the work.

I worked at Affymetrix as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice to work at a big, international company. Really liked some of the people and team building activities.

    Cons

I was a contract employee, and an offer was never made to me to become full time. I spent about a year there and saw 75% turnover in my department. People clearly wanted to leave, and I definitely saw a low level of commitment to their employees, and as a contract employee, I was obviously lower than them...

    Advice to Management

Gotta do something to hold on to your employees.

I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

good group of people to work with, very smart and outgoing people.

    Cons

when I was there every 6 months we had a layoff, management like to hire friends and form clicks that just runs the company down. We build factories just to demolish soon after, spend millions on new technology and never apply them or make a profit from them.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so greedy, stop laying people off and hiring friends that are nice but don't know how to grow the business. it's killing the company. Develop a plan for the future and go for it, and put people in charge that are accountable. Managers need to stop cutting teams to the bone then hire some back because the cut too deep. It kills morale and impact productivity. Make managers accountable for the team's failure.

Thank you for your feedback. Affymetrix has a solid plan in place so that the company can continuously improve.

-cafeteria & breakrooms- is it a bonus to not eat a single meal at home? Maybe you work to much.
    -a few, kind veterans colleagues...

    Cons

-entrench "cave-dwelling" fire-breathing dragons, oh my!
-if you never change your core technology you never have to learn, grow or accept new ideas or people(s).

    Advice to Management

VP with Sr. directors must together take charge to work for change. This change is to better compete with existing & different market and make your new products successful from release. The cost-cutting strategy has been obtuse & harsh on the loyal, long-term temp "recycled" employees.

    Pros

Great technology. Do something good for the world. Many of the people are fun and driven individuals. Company has potential for turning around. Diagnostic market is exciting and could bring long term prosperity.

    Cons

Poor management decision making. Infighting between departments. Politicized atmosphere. Promotions more a matter of who you know, not what you bring to the table.

    Advice to Management

Weed out middle managers who are hurting the company. Put more emphasis on product development, marketing, and manufacturing operations. Subcontracting/outsourcing manufacturing does not work for low volume, high complexity, and regulated environments. Stop promoting finance specialists to lead operations.
