I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility with regard to hours worked.
    Health benefit cost is low.
Fairly good lunch program, $5 per day.
    Friendly coworkers.

    Cons

    Comparably very low wages.
    Lack of opportunity for advancement.
    Heavy workload.
    Management not transparent.
    Poor communication from management.
"What have you done for us lately" attitude from management.
Promotions and pay increases are tight to a very bureaucratic and red taped HR system.
Pay increases are only given once per year and are very limited.
    Outdated equipment and machinery.
    Almost non existent R&D.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more because the cost of living in Santa Clara is extremely high. Replace lost talent instead of expecting others to pick up work load permanently. Promote based on merit and not director favoritism.

I worked at Affymetrix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None that I can think of, Human Resources supported and defended discrimination, not the rights and benefit of employees.

    Cons

Although employees outside of IT seemed satisfied with their jobs, IT department was the worst job I've ever had. Management, all the way up to CIO, was the most incompetent, dishonest group of people I have ever worked for. If you're looking for a job where you're micro-managed, unappreciated, and treated differently based on your race, this is (was) the place for you. Hope it's changed.

    Advice to Management

Watch your management, interview existing employees to (anonymously) audit the activities of dishonest managers and terminate them. Investigate kickbacks from consulting firms.

    Pros

-cafeteria & breakrooms- is it a bonus to not eat a single meal at home? Maybe you work to much.
    -a few, kind veterans colleagues...

    Cons

-entrench "cave-dwelling" fire-breathing dragons, oh my!
-if you never change your core technology you never have to learn, grow or accept new ideas or people(s).

    Advice to Management

VP with Sr. directors must together take charge to work for change. This change is to better compete with existing & different market and make your new products successful from release. The cost-cutting strategy has been obtuse & harsh on the loyal, long-term temp "recycled" employees.

    Pros

Affy really has a fantastic technology, and some of the people developing it are the best and brightest people with whom you will ever work.

    Cons

The management at Affy always felt that profitability was a side effect of doing the most cutting edge science. As a result, strategy was driven by a small customer pool of leading edge scientists, instead of understanding the complete market.

Additionally, the strength of the IP, led the company to assume a serious competitor would not emerge. Though it's MBA 101 that if you create a lucrative market, others will invade the space. It was only a matter of time before some company (Illumina) figured out a technology that could meet the same customer needs as the GeneChip.

    Advice to Management

    It's about the profitability!

    Pros

Very unique technology and ample applications
    Skillful, Talented and Experienced resources/employees
    Good and friendly working environment
Comparative salaries and facilities (considering Mid size company)

    Cons

Beside having a talented resources not able to coverage in growth of business.
Unbalanced organization infrastructure, Too many managers and upper level executives

    Advice to Management

Too much focus on the Product development and lacking far behind in other functional area. Need DNA attitude (Daring, Passionate and Platinum) in other area for balancing/optimizing things.
Need fresh/new resources who can think out side the box..

    Pros

    Technology and field are wonderful.
Old Gaurd at company are creative and a joy to work with.
    Launching products is fun.

    Cons

Company gets in the way of its own success.
    Terrible growth opportunities.
    Poor reputation in industry.

    Advice to Management

There is a fundamental lack of understanding on basic economic drivers at the company. If they understood the economics of their business, they would be able to lower cogs, allocate resources better and be more competitive.

I worked at Affymetrix as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good money for a contract gig, good people to work with, lots of freedom to improve things, within limits. I'd recommend it.

    Cons

The usual corporate nonsense, unrealistic deadlines, lousy content, no respect for worker bees on the part of senior management, no money to make things actually good, just "good enough," which was almost never good.

    Advice to Management

Lose the skin-flintyness, spend the money to keep people from extreme burnout, be realistic, abandon the agile/scrum development concept.
