I worked at Afilias full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Office hours are flexible. People generally have newer laptops, plus monitor.

    Cons

Lots of staff firings. Yet upper managers who don't get anything done keep their jobs and even get promotions. The technology is a mess. Staff never know what's going on. No leadership. all the upper management is in Canada.

    Advice to Management

get rid of those who don't do their job well, rather than promoting them. Fire the managers and their managers, not the bottom level staff and the bottom managers.

I worked at Afilias full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's great from a work-life balance standpoint. Work moves slowly, few people arrive early or leave late. If you arrive at 8am or leave after 6:30 it's a ghost office. Definitely a place for those with little ambition or who like to coast.

Lots of people spend time chatting and goofing off instead of working.

Pay is ok by Canadian standards. Three weeks vacation a year is better than the usual two weeks.

    Cons

Afilias is a company that exists to milk a monopoly granted to it by ICANN and Public Interest Registry, two powerful non-profit companies that have granted Afilias a cut of the revenues generated when registering certain domain names. Like many monopolies it is slow, fat, lazy and riven by internal politics.

Workplace culture is often abusive, with various forms of bullying common. Promotion is made on political grounds and technical competence is not rewarded.

The employment contract offered to employees offers only one week of pay in lieu of notice when fired without cause, which is below the Ontario statutory minimum for employees with more than one year of service. Vacation pay is calculated according to the company's use-it-or-lose-it policy, which is also in violation of Ontario's 4% vacation pay rule (6% for people who get three weeks vacation).

    Advice to Management

Splitting the company between two offices makes everything take much longer, especially since many managers in the Toronto office are resentful and like to play political games. Yes, rent in Horsham is cheaper than Philadelphia, and yes salaries in Toronto are lower than in the US, but this has a cost. The fragmented organizational structure gives people lots of places to hide and drags everything out much longer than it should.

I have been working at Afilias full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Laid back environment, friendly people
    Freedom to experiment
    Pockets of ingenious engineers

    Cons

Weak management (middle and upper), no sense of direction
Strong silo culture and extreme communication deficits, bad execution
Tech and business don't trust each other, rumors of corruption on the C level
Out of date office and compensation package

    Advice to Management

Get rid of most of your structure and empower people to do what they KNOW is right not what some "suit" dreamed up. Establish trust and get over yourselves, you are not as big or as safe as you think.

I have been working at Afilias full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Low stress workplace, they let you run Linux on your desktop, people are generally nice, most people don't have to regularly work long hours. They buy very good server hardware. The company is pretty good about sending people on training courses or conferences.

    Cons

Middle management isn't very good and senior management is often absent from happenings at the Toronto office. Getting clear directions or decisions is sometimes impossible and projects move at a very slow pace. The company is small (less than 200 people) but there are a lot of departments that look out for their own interests

    Advice to Management

People are afraid of the consequences of being blamed for something that goes wrong, they would rather find excuses why something can't be done than risk trying it. Tell people that is okay to try something that doesn't work out. Cancel projects that aren't working out don't let them die a slow painful death
