I worked at Afscme full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Health benefits was great, no premium. But I know for sure it won't last long. That is the only good thing.

    Cons

    Unprofessional selfish management.
Force employees to pay money (big chunks) out of pay check to go to political campaigns.
Horrible working hours (10-6pm) at HQ in D.C. No flexibility don't even try to change your working hours. No consideration to family or any personnel issues.

    Advice to Management

Invest and hire managers from other places, do not promote internally so they come with new blood.
Be flexible with your employees, so they can balance work\life.

    Pros

    Lotto for benefits is deceptive

    Cons

Deceptive union. Just wants your money and then you can't stop it

    Advice to Management

Honestly inform the people that the benefits you say you fight for you really don't fight for. This is a state funded program. One doesn't need a union

    Pros

Wonderful people and welcoming environment. Everyon treated like family. The benefits were extraordinarily generous and the management team exceedingly bright.

    Cons

Scary outlook for the future of the organization.

    Advice to Management

    Do your best.

    Pros

None, nothing to say for pros!

    Cons

Where do I start? Unprofessional work environment, crazy managers that yell at you for no reason and loud people everywhere and dirty offices. They will treat you funny if you don't act like them.

    Advice to Management

Check your management staff, Re-train them or get new ones!

I have been working at Afscme (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting, unique work experience, with "interesting" people we shall see, you will learn a lot of things that you may or may not want to learn.

    Cons

Working at an organization like this can be a double-edged sword, things won't make sense but just go with it.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the employees, which managers at many organizations don't, intervene before things become an issue, instead of trying to fix them after the sky has fallen/

    Pros

The cause. Your co-workers. The members and people you're fighting for. Its easy to get wrapped up in things and all of a sudden you've been on the road for 3 months.

    Cons

Long hours and extensive travel. Management sometimes stifles innovation.

    Advice to Management

    Allow more cross departmental movement

I worked at Afscme full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Engaging work, interesting experiences, strong leaders, good opportunity for development, mentored by someone I respected

    Cons

Intense travel schedule, had to move twice when male counterparts did not, some difficult bosses who yelled frequently and were difficult to work with,

    Advice to Management

Emphasizing the leadership and promotion of women and people of color is important. So is kindness, which is very much lacking in the field.

The cause is important and this is a very forward thinking organization. Leaders are inspirational and staff is outstanding. Great commradery

    Cons

The long hours. The challenges for the labor movement is hard these days. Not sure AFSCME has the strongest vision for future.

    Advice to Management

    Great staff
