      Macro: Fair, Micro: Needs reform

Sep 22, 2020 - Senior Executive in Bedok New Town,

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good benefits: fair in terms of leave allowance, off-in-lieu. During the COVID-19 period, several expressions of appreciation through care packs, vouchers from the CEO. Company culture seems well-intentioned, strong mission. Company-wide conversations, especially with top management, appears strongly encouraged with many initiatives. Work itself (SGO-specific) gives one much experience that might not be found in other roles, is purposeful and eye-opening, encourages personal growth.

      Cons

Actions sometimes incongruous with speech, e.g. emphasising employees' need to care for our mental health, and then heaving on deadlines and KPIs within the same period. Middle management (reporting officers, SDLs) leaves much to be desired. They seem unaligned with the wider company's values, tend towards partiality, subjectivism, and surface judgements. Whoever is showiest receives credit, while those who do not publicise their work/have different opinions may receive scrutiny. Middle management deflects blame and appropriates credit. Great information asymmetry between middle management and subordinates, the amount/quality of information subordinates receive depends on which supervisor you have/the relationship you have with your supervisor. The Broken Telephone phenomenon is rampant here. With this lack of information and constant feeling of uncertainty whether they have been provided with accurate and adequate knowledge, subordinates are unable to innovate improvements in their work (e.g. in processes, strategies). Preceding point leads to employees feeling unappreciated. Erasure of subordinates' efforts and names from tasks, with middle managers' names tacked on instead, even if task was wholly undertaken by the subordinates. Unsure if this is representative of Singaporean corporate culture as a whole or only of this organisation. Furthermore, much of the work (SGO-specific) should be assessed qualitatively, but KPIs are quantitative and are not appropriate measures given the nature of the work. Does not seem to have avenues for progress and professional development. Asked about this many times in my interview and was given the vague answer each time: "you can go into management or specialisation". Should have understood this to be a red-flag. Do not personally see a progress track from my position in SGO. There is a possibility of there being a "limit" as to how much one can learn/grow in this role.

      Cons

Too many grey areas; procedures and processes awaiting clarification, forced to think hard, need to be very adaptable to physical and human environment as they change throughout the year, jobscope changes throughout the year.

      Pros

Good benefits like annual leaves and some flexi benefits.

      Cons

Terrible chief who has no experience in healthcare sector and has an EQ worst than a door knob. Get her way by constantly belittling her subordinates and her peer. Very political environment with the chiefs trying to bring in their friends to the organisations to try consolidates their political position. A scolding culture within the organization which breeds a lot of responsibility pushing.

      Pros

      Good Benefits, Above Average Pay.

      Cons

Top-Down Management, leading to Micro-Managing. Multi-Level Clearance for almost everything, very inefficient and frustrating. Rather than looking at things objectively, you are made to make decisions based on who is behind the idea/initiative.
