      Lost it's relevance and soul

      Dec 9, 2019 - Anonymous Employee

      Pros

      Decent compensation & fringe benefits

      Cons

      1) Political, territorial amongst Divisions. 2) Generally insecure, incapable mid to senior management (there are good ones, but many have left along the years), many of which consumed with self-interest. 3) Rewards skewed towards rewarding those who can put up a good show (or slides) for management 4) Importantly, losing its relevance in care development and integration - we are supposed to be advocates, thought leaders driving future models. Not messengers, additional layers with no value add, folks pretending to sector develop by coordinating needless meetings etc. RHSes are pushing ahead with the right financial levers (e.g. capitation eventually), domain experts/knowledge who actually know the ground. 5) Lost management (strategy) - a re-org will not solve the fundamental issues by itself. 6) Place of no consequence & avoidance in tough decisions- bad behaviour and performance? No worries, simply get a transfer and all's good. Never ending vicious cycle that create cesspools and low morale.

      Turn back... while you can

      Pros

Medical benefits are one of the best ones I've seen. Especially so if you are intending to start a family - covers pregnancies! Performance, company bonuses are also very good Lastly, more leave than you can use...

      Cons

Generally AIC suffers from a lot of bureaucracy and red tape - try not to buy too many things, it's a long drawn affair with procurement! Individual divisions seemed too focused on their own areas to the point that there is a lot of duplication of work. This stems from the fact that some of the senior management cannot see eye-to-eye and can't work together. Senior Management seems very lost in terms of direction and setting of goals for the organisation. They are, however, very good at presenting a good picture to MOH and healthcare sector, so it get a lot of good press and impression from the public. There is a very high attrition rate in the organisation and very poor employee engagement. Efforts by senior management to improve the engagement are actually paying lip service and not addressing the crux of the issues raised up by employees.

      Poor management

      Pros

Good location with excellent food options around the area. Many colleagues have significant experience in healthcare sector. Slightly better renumeration as compared to rest of public healthcare sector. Good healthcare benefits and leave quantum (20 days of leave/year at the start, goes up to a max of 24 days)

      Cons

Overall poor senior management that likes to micromanage and wastes time getting staff to do a lot of unproductive "busy work". Unhealthy work environment in some divisions with plenty of politicking at senior and mid-management level, and a CEO who is afraid of offending some of his senior management. Administrative and approval processes swing two ways - they are either too onerous, or are not even in place. Lower renumeration and relatively slow career progression as compared to private sector or most govt agencies. Many staff join the organisation bright-eyed and eager to make a difference in healthcare sector, but before long end up jaded, disillusioned and doing just enough to earn their pay check.

Many opportunities but careful of the politics

      Pros

Many opportunities to make an impact on changing the attitudes of Singaporeans towards aging. Very smart colleagues, most are friendly and energetic.

      Cons

Promotion requires lots of visibility. Senior management is very political and is not committed to aligning staff professional development with the organisation's priorities.

      Extremely Challenging Place to work

      Pros

Close to the best food places in Singapore. Amoy has amazing food. Very central location. Easy to access by public transportation.

      Cons

Bosses are extremely unprofessional. Offend the senior management and you are condemned, no more avenues for advancement. Promotion is based purely on if they like you, not based on your ability to perform. You can be a top performer but if the boss likes an average performer, the average performer gets promoted. If you make senior management unhappy, they can fire you. I have seen 3 long serving staff asked to go in a short span of 1 year. Seriously need to suck up to senior management just to stay at the company.

      Worst work experience ever

      Pros

Salary Working hours Benefits Location Bonus

      Cons

      1) Bad culture and senior management - Every division has their own secret agenda instead of working towards its mission to serve the seniors of Singapore 2) Haven for Political drama - You are told to do based on who is requestor. Senior management sucking up to other Division chiefs or because they cannot offended. 3) It kills your passion - Employees lack passion or lose them after soaking in the culture Management created. People with passion and tries to fight the norms are blacklisted. Robots who do what they are told to do are well loved. 4) Not integrated within company - Divisons do not work with each other. Everyone thinks they are the experts 5) Senior Management form their own alliances and talk bad openly about others. 6) Bad Guidance - It is never management’s fault. They are quick to point their finger at the team for all mistakes. My ex DD created roadblocks but was never understanding when the timeline is delayed slightly due to his changes. At the end of the day, it is always our fault. 5) Unfairness - If the boss likes you, you can get away with murder, if not, he makes it obvious that you are his target. Staff on his good side gets alienated from the rest. 6) Bad ethics - A DD talks bad about his people to the rest of the team, trying to sow discord. There are stories of some senior management gossiping about his own team members to othe divisions. 7) Senior management doesn’t share insights. The boss might have an idea of what he wants, but will never tell you. You are left on your own to Guess what he wants. What kind of leader is waiting to pounce on own team for their mistakes?

      Pros

Work can be meaningful, central location

      Cons

      - Unclear, territorial and petty senior management. Once your boss offend them, you will have difficult time - Starting grade is Executive. Your friends will have bigger title like Manager. From seniors sharing, it takes many years to be Manager and even then, hard to get promoted - Not clear who they choose as their top scorers and how to be put on fast promotion track. The people chosen look quite normal type - Finance and procurement process will succeed in killing you if you don't leave - very very tedious - Work keeps changing and alot of work to do, need to OT
