I have been working at Agilent Technologies as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of really smart, bright people work here. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Contractors are treated as chattel. And there are a lot of them. Everyone is overworked.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees! They are bright people -- when they tell you what can (or can't) be done, pay attention and don't overcommit.

    Pros

Global Organization that does work you can feel proud of. Reputable company with a recognized name.

    Cons

Limited development for leaders unless you have manager willing to invest time in you. 60 hr work week is the norm. Limited investment in developing workforce for future growth

    Advice to Management

If we actually lived the Values, this would be a great place to work.

    Cons

    - workforce resistant to change, heavy water cooler talk, incestuous
    - not dynamic enough, conservative to point of mediocrity
    - HR pretty much self-service until it comes to keeping company indemnified of any trouble at all costs (to individuals)
    - truly terrible customer management systems

    Advice to Management

    - keep supportive culture, flush terrible M&A and HR

I have been working at Agilent Technologies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, open door policy

    Cons

No oversight on 1st level management which can and does create an environment of favoritism. Tend to buy companies rather than develop from within. Manager from acquired companies get management positions without understanding company policies

    Advice to Management

Be more aware of how your supervisors treat employees

    Pros

Coworkers and management are nice and understanding. Good compensation and benefits.

The work in manufacturing is terrible. You are always set up to fail and nothing ever goes right. Communication between departments is horrible.

I have been working at Agilent Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fairly modern facility, though with poor acoustic damping, and you may often find yourself wearing noise-deadening headphones, esp. if certain loud people are voicing their opinions, or electronic motors are running near work desks (rather than in labs, where they should be). Naming labs after scientists and meet rooms after former employees is a nice touch, but someone should have learned how to spell all the names. The life-work balance is quite good, with flexible hours. (It would have to be good, to offset the negatives below.) Generally, people at the "ordinary" levels are pleasant enough.

    Cons

Management here is a boy’s club, and admission is by invitation only. Most of the R&D engineers have not yet figured out that promotion in this company is through sales and marketing channels, NOT through R&D. They may as well slash their wrists now. From the GM down, it’s all under the thumb of marketing: all R&D managers report to marketing people. I don’t quite see the logic of that, in a “tech” company. Management spend more time worrying where people will hot-desk to next, than in getting to know those people. "Culture" is an uneasy balance between Agilent and the old (Varian) nepotistic legacy culture. Salaries are rather poor.

    Advice to Management

Fire yourselves: you have no clothes.

    Pros

Large company in many countries. Large market share. Typical benefits for the size of company.

    Cons

Too many silos. Equivalent to many companies under one roof that impacts employee effectiveness, customer satisfaction, product compatibility and time to deliver field solutions.

    Advice to Management

Focus on culture, invest in employees, invest in the long run of the company. Stop the patch work and make the necessary longterm investments.
