Good Place to learn but culture/loyalty lacks

Jul 29, 2021 - Manufacturing Chemist in Boulder, CO

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Excellent place to learn biopharmaceutical world and upstream/downstream chemistry. They really do care about their employees and offer decent pay/benefits and growth opportunities.

      Cons

The company culture is very boring and lacks any sense of loyalty. Their push for work/life balance is actually not as even as it seems. Certain shifts just get stuffed in barrel when it comes to production and the culture is still very white/upper middle class/science background and educated. A culture is not changed just by hiring diverse candidates, a culture is changed by UNDERSTANDING a diverse candidate base. This includes across all diversity not just race. This includes backgrounds, SES, work experiences, lifestyles etc... This is not to say you are required to know everything about everyone but as a team we didn't even eat together or ask each other questions or anything. It was do your 40 hours and go home. Period.

      Pros

The time off is awesome and we do some interesting stuff at Agilent

      Cons

There's some bad managers. If you end up working for them, prepared to be overworked and underpaid. The company preaches work life balance but some of the managers don't get it.

Agilent Boulder is the 7th Circle of Hell

Sep 12, 2019 - Manufacturing in Boulder, CO

      Pros

Just like being deathly ill makes you appreciate when your well, leaving Agilent will make everything else seem so much better.

      Cons

25 years in the industry and I can honestly say that Agilent Boulder is the worst place I have ever worked. Why? Management is deplorable and treats their employees like they are dogs, oh wait... dogs are treated better. Truth is, management couldn’t care less about the employee, and there is no work life balance at all. Agilent has a plethora of feel-good policies that make you think you are working for an ethical and caring company, but it is all window dressing. Unfortunately Agilent Boulder’s not like the rest of Agilent and the site is filled with heartless, soulless predatory managers that run their employees into the ground and then discards them like trash. Turnover at the site is phenomenal and speaks volumes about how people are treated at the site. The Human Resources department hides anything that management does that violates Agilent’s policies, so you can’t get any help resolving issues, and then you get targeted for retaliation. If you think Agilent’s 4 star reputation reflects it’s Boulder site, guess again - its about half that at Boulder.

Great place to get your feet wet but not quite a place for career advancement.

Feb 1, 2009 - Manufacturing Engineer in Santa Rosa, CA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Abundance of experience engineers to learn from. Especially being a new college graduate, I found that most senior EE's were willing to mentor and guide new engineers like myself. Great place to dive in hardware and see how state of the art test equipment is designed.

      Cons

Too many lifers and deadwood. Some engineers have been with Agilent many years and delivering sub par work knowingly their seniority grants them a free pass. Manager's mentality is that these deadwood engineers are only a few years out from retirement, so in the interest of not hurting anyone's feelings, just let them cruise away. Problem is that these engineers hold up ranking spots that could be actually given to less senior engineers who actually perform well. May not be able to work on projects that you would like because someone is already there and has been doing it for the past 20 yrs. The salary/bonus/etc is lacking behind other high tech companies. Agilent makes up for it through its flexible work/life balance. Employees are friendly to one another and always willing to lend a hand. Some engineers complain about the low pay but they stay with Agilent because of the type of projects and job responsibilities that is hard to find else where.
