I have been working at Agrace HospiceCare part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Agrace does so many things for the community. Agrace also goes above & beyond families expectations during their loved ones end of life & no request is too big or small. 99% of the employees have that helping hand & friendly personality that you truly feel like the kindness & care that you're surrounded by is so surreal. Pets are welcome - a horse has even been in the facility. Beds have been moved to allow families to sleep in the same room or even next to the patients. Want a milkshake at 2 am? No problem. A spa bath? Again, no problem.

    Cons

As all careers in the medical field can sometimes be overwhelming to complete in a timely manner, coworkers are very willing to assist when needed as long as they're not in the middle of something. With that being said, there's times you'll get a group of patients that all need close 1:1 care, are risk for falls, or are always on their call light, so you'll sometimes notice you have no time to chart until the end of your shift. You'll feel fatigued at times or have minimal chances to get to the restroom, but since you're a medical professional (whether CNA, LPN, RN's etc.) you're already aware that this is common no matter the facility of employment.

    Advice to Management

Keep wages competitive & make the process for internal advancement easy. Hold meetings that hold value to communication or knowledge. Be flexible with time off requests. Continue to do these things & employees will never leave.

    Pros

co-workers were wonderful to work with. We had to look out for one and other.

    Cons

Atmosphere was very stressful, after the New CEO Lynne Myers took over.

    Advice to Management

Stop destroying the lives of passionate, committed, loyal and hard working people.

I worked at Agrace HospiceCare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good mission, most people working there care deeply about the core of what hospice is about. Interested in improving things but not always sure how to go about it.

    Cons

Ultimately it often felt very easy to be blindsided by things. Many times I would think that things were going very well, only to have a major upheaval coming from a completely separate section of the company, often at the direction of someone with more unwritten "clout". Sometimes felt like your performance was being evaluated via appearance or "the grapevine" rather than actual results.

I worked at Agrace HospiceCare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Clinical staff work very hard long hrs, dedicated to pts families. Hospice care is rewarding work with any agency

    Cons

Management will get rid of you if you value your time with family. They make you work long hrs. You can never plan time after work and miss out on family activities.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to take a pay cut. Your marketing is aggressive. You hunt for the dying. You pollute the Earth with your billboards and facilities. Pts can be cared for in the community w/o being taken out of their homes.

I worked at Agrace HospiceCare (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Staff giving direct care to patients are excellent-- competent and compassionate (though turnover of these is high due to frustration with leadership); team approach (though teams are re-formed too often, lending to instability)

    Cons

Dysfunctional leadership, especially at senior level. Intimidation and lying are common. Major decisions are made without including key knowledgeable/experienced players. If you are a "yes-man," you will succeed here. If you are driven by integrity, you'll be frustrated or not last long. Image and bottom line trump patient and family care. Agrace really dropped the ball when they chose to eliminate chaplains from their care teams, opting instead for counselors who primarily offer grief support after death. The environment and team dynamics changed after that, and leaving spirituality out of hospice makes no sense. Agrace was extraordinary at one time. New leadership, bad decisions, high turnover, really stressed out employees (due to unreasonable expectations), and putting patient care second has brought Agrace down to being a rather ordinary hospice. Poor employee morale.

    Advice to Management

You'd be a stronger company if you didn't feel so threatened by the wisdom and experience of your employees; perhaps there wouldn't be so many poor decisions made, that are usually reversed, when you finally figure out you were wrong. LISTEN to your people out in the field, and trust them-- they care deeply about the patients and have a lot to offer. Stop spending money on billboards, branding, ridiculous uniforms, etc., and put that money toward patient care and adequate, holistic (including spititual) staffing.

I worked at Agrace HospiceCare full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing, caring, professional people with real heart.

    Cons

Too many organization-wide changes with little to no follow-through.

    Advice to Management

It is great to be agile in this economy, but if you choose a plan of action that affects the entire organization, put enough resources in place to support the new plan. Choose leadership that is not insular, and don't put so much pressure on them that they have to sacrifice quality of life in order to do a good job.
