I worked at Air Force Academy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Meaningful mission - educating future leaders/cadets. Academic schedule allows for generous time off during the holidays.

    Cons

Organization is so huge innovative change takes time or doesn't happen at all. Bureaucracy.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Air Force Academy (More than 10 years)

    Pros

We believe in vision and passion. Being part of something bigger than a company or job matters to our employees. You’ll enhance the security, economic well-being, health, and safety of people in our nation and around the world. You’ll be challenged. You’ll make an impact.

    Cons

Football games make it hard to get on and off of the Academy. Also graduation makes it hard to get on and off base.

    Advice to Management

I do not have any advice to management, it is the military and things will be done in a military way.

I have been working at Air Force Academy full-time

    Pros

Peerless educational institute staffed by the best men and women in the country. The staff and cadets team together quite well to make it a wonderful place to work.

    Cons

No cons to think of. With robust feedback mechanisms for all people assigned here it provides a quick way for leadership to hear the concerns of the staff.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Being as inclusive as possible fuels synergy and buy-in. The great transparency is appreciated by all as well.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Air Force Academy part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked at the community library, not to be confused with the cadet library. It's a pretty laid back environment and it's very tight knit, so you're going to get to know most of the patrons very well. Some days can be fun when there's a good amount of work to do. They're flexible with your schedule, which is a HUGE pro.

    Cons

The pay is very low, only about 30 cents above minimum wage. The more seasoned staff may try to take advantage of you as a new person at times, by telling you things that aren't true, such as "you have to arrive ten minutes early without pay" or lying to you about other policies. One person even convinced a couple of the newer people that she was their manager and that they needed to report to her. The people who have been there for a while get very caught up in drama. It can be very annoying. Everything is highly outdated. Brush up on your type-writing skills if you're coming to work up here. Seriously...they use a type writer. You will never move up in this position and will probably never even be a full-time employee. It's great for military spouses looking for a part-time job, but for others who are actually looking for a career, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that it's clear as day who staff needs to report to and what is legally expected of them. It's never clear and no one is really on the same page.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Air Force Academy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Mentoring tomorrow's military leaders, the pride of working at a NCAA division I school, and who can beat the view.

    Cons

Sometimes the cadets can be a little pampered. I get they are not fully in the military yet, but the environment has slipped over the years.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to move forward with the times. This generation of students is way ahead of where we were when we were in high school. They need access to more technology.

    Pros

It is deeply satisfying to know that you are helping train the future leaders of the Air Force

    Cons

Because it is such a small shop, the salaries may not be as competitive.
