I worked at Air National Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great - pay, training, fellow employees!

    Cons

One less weekend per month off than other federal employees, constant CBT training, and frequent management induced stress.

    Advice to Management

Fire or retrain senior managers who perpetuate crisis management through their inability to plan effeciently.

I worked at Air National Guard (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Doors begin to open aggressively for a better opportunity and the skill set became distilled in our work ethic.

    Cons

The medical benefit's were not always attached, though we completed two weeks and drill weekends, the entitlement for medical only served us as member's at the time of service - Where it could have benefited more was maybe beside the annual check which was every three years. There were times when we as member's were ill or injured on the "off time" of drill weekends and or pastime-full time status.

    Advice to Management

They did a great job, I have no complaint's

I have been working at Air National Guard full-time

    Pros

Full-time employment, no deployments unless you want to, can grow strong roots in one area, can do stat tours in other areas and come back when complete

    Cons

May have to deal with clicks and unnecessary politics. New leadership may be good or bad so you are rolling the dice every few years.

I have been working at Air National Guard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Mostly good leadership who care and treat you like family. There are many educational and training opportunities and benefits. Stability.

    Cons

Not too much. There's always a chance to deploy to hostile environments. Two types of full time employment, AGR (active duty) and technician, can feel like a divide. AGRs generally have good pay and benefits -- and difficult to get due to competition, but it is also highly dependent on specialty. Some members will have a much lower opportunity to become an AGR than others. Technicians are federal employees with good benefits, but unlike AGRs, you'll pay a portion for medical & dental insurance and the pay is less if you have a fair amount of time in service. The only real benefit of technicians over AGR is getting an additional retirement paycheck. In some units, the "good 'ole boy" network exists and can be a barrier if you transfer from active duty or from another guard or reserve unit.

    Advice to Management

Assess all your people equally and engage them in the mission and the welfare of the unit. Allow equal opportunities for AGR positions. Know your airman -- every airman has a story!
