I worked at Airgas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to work with great people and some a very dedicated to their job. Learned new skills in reference to shipping, logistic management, and the refrigerant business. 401K and insurance benefits are good.

    Cons

No room for career advancement; a lot of the employees at the company have been working there for over 15 years at the same position. Unless someone retires or leaves, there is not much advancing in any department. There is also a lack of communication between employees and upper management. When there is a huge issue, upper management seems to just tell employees they need "get it done." There is no explanation of why and how to resolve the task.

I have been working at Airgas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very easy going terminal manager, shop mechanics are quick to respond to equipment problems. Dispatchers are easy to work with and don't hassle you over hours of service if you can't complete a run.

    Cons

401K match is horrible, heath, dental, and vision insurance are sub par and expensive. Equipment is ancient and breaks down frequently, newer tractors are cheapest of the cheap and break down frequently.

I was an Air Liquide employee before A.L. bought Airgas. All distribution employees were moved under the Airgas umbrella. We took a cut in 401K contributions of 7%. A.L. would contribute up to 9% in matching funds, Airgas is only 2%. That equates for me to a cut of $7000 a year. They want to take us from progressive pay to straight hourly (overtime after 40) which will cost me about $200 a week. The runs we have are very short now thus you have to waste a lot of time to make any money. With progressive pay, efficiency is rewarded. Hourly is a lazy man's scale and forces you to spend a lot more time at work rather than getting done quickly.

    Advice to Management

LISTEN to your drivers and the people on the ground doing the work. You have no idea what's going on in the "real world" from behind your desk in your ivory tower. Leave A.L.'s compensation for it's employees in tact, you are only promoting laziness and costing yourself more in the long run.

I worked at Airgas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Majority of co-workers
    Benefits, PTO, etc.
    Nice office environment
(There's a 20 word minimum here, but I can't think of any other positives)

    Cons

Low pay for amount of work on your desk
Management is unrealistic with expectations of their employees
If it doesn't effect management, they could care less
    No positive reinforcement of employees
Treated like just another Joe off the street
Management seems to forget how it was when they were just an "employee"
Again, way too much work to do and management seems to care less if you sink or swim

    Advice to Management

Remember where you came from years ago
Treat employees how you would like to be treated
Show your employees they're not just another Employee Number
Raise salaries. Period. You know employees are underpaid for the amount of work you want them to do
