I have been working at Airgas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work hours are good. Home every night without much overtime most of the time. People are fantastic just hard working people that give their all in a physically demanding job.

    Cons

Things vary too much by region and division to the point where no one knows what everyone else is doing. There is no knowledge share, in fact collaboration is highly discouraged outside your region.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging. Allow high performers to perform without holding them back due to your own insecurities.

I have been working at Airgas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Coworkers are a great bunch. Team lead is a good guy. Good benefits and weekends off. It is truly a team effort and everyone is willing to help one another.

    Cons

Management keeps us chronically understaffed to save money at the expense of the staff. The turnover rate is really high because of this and management doesn't seem to care.

    Advice to Management

    Hire enough people.

Current Employee - Inside Sales/Outside Sales Support/Driver/Whatever the Company Makes Me Do

I have been working at Airgas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Being able to do whatever you want because management is so dumbfounded of the company operations. That's about it...

    Cons

No direction what so ever to be able to operate smoothly at any level of the company. Upper management (directors, senior managers, ect..) play a blame game for just about everything. Middle management (plant/branch managers, ops managers, ect..) are completely clueless how to do their jobs, most of them have very unprofessional attitudes.

    Advice to Management

Quit it with the crap home depot management that is constantly being hired. It may actually be worth it to hire within the company at a bit of a higher pay rate to achieve successful performance outcomes. Management in the middle level are in need of major training and their bosses ( regional managers, abocs) are completely clueless of what operations are actually being performed at the branch level. For instance, it is now 2:00pm, my manager started his day at 8:30am yet decided to roll on out of here at 1:30pm... this is an everyday occurrence and is getting old. His manager has no idea this branch manager is stealing company time and is completely unaware of his useless knowledge for this company when he is actually present.

It's a shame, this company was once decent to work for. Now I'm just counting down the days until I can put in my leave notice. (Hopefully within a couple weeks).

    Advice to Management

Slow to get answers to customers

I have been working at Airgas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - not a popular or well-known industry, so they tend to promote from within
    - plant jobs are fairly high paying for little skill required
    - no nights, no weekends in branches/plants
    - demand never really goes away, wide customer base, many of which are critical to infrastructure
    - lots of people have been in the business for a long time, so in theory, there should be a lot of upper-level positions available in the coming years

    Cons

    - like most companies, always trying to be lean. Often try not to replace someone if they move up or quit. Our office has gone from a high of ten people to only five full-time employees. Somehow we still never get a bonus though.
    - not very diverse at the branch/plant level - mostly older males
    - tends to be a little bit of a "boy's club" in that people get friends and family hired and move up based on who they know
    - bonuses are based on...well I am not sure what they are based on and they are infrequent and rarely consequential

    Advice to Management

Running lean to some degree is fine, but burning people out is not good for business. Make bonuses more transparent and attainable. Be careful with how people are hired and promoted.

    Pros

You can work your way up the ladder, and the compensation is fairly good for the entry-level employees in operations.

    Cons

Upper management and executives seem to favor Good Ol' Boys Club and politics over doing the right thing and recognizing hardworking, passionate employees.
