    Pros

Everyone at Akebia is inclusive and makes you immediately feel like you are part of the team. There are many smart people that have different backgrounds, and we've all somehow all found our way to Akebia. Even though the company is growing rapidly, people know what good looks like and implement it daily. Akebia does so many of the things you want a company to do, such as communicate, have great benefits, respect life balance, and be flexible.

    Cons

As we grow, it will be interesting to see how the company transforms from a learning/research organization into a commercial one.

I worked at Akebia Therapeutics full-time

    Pros

    Sensible CEO. Good benefit.

    Cons

Emotional and flipping back-and-forth decisions on important programs, demoralizing and huge waste of $$$$$$$. The last but not least, ugly stabbing in the back culture.

    Advice to Management

Build a solid team with people who really know drug development. Good benefit may lure some people but won't retain the true talents. People using the company as stepping stone. Sad.

I have been working at Akebia Therapeutics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Akebia employs some great people that are wonderful to work with. CMO is fantastic - honest, clear, and decisive. Good opportunities if you can stomach the culture and rise to the cutthroat occasion.

    Cons

Massive growing pains at this company - they’ve bitten off more than they can chew and it definitely shows. Relationships are extremely strained both within the company and out because several upper management folks have fostered relationships where sensitive information is a commodity to be guarded and treated like treasure and demands a reactive, rather than proactive, approach. HR is clearly working for the company and not for the employees, and not interested in implementing employee feedback or obvious changes that need to be made. Development is obscure at best, and as such Akebia is hemorrhaging the good people who used to work there.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to really think about what needs to be done to keep its good employees - it’s a cultural shift, not retention bonuses or veiled pep talks. The culture needs to shift or the company will continue the downward spiral. Stop treating your employees like children and trust them!! Also: the software used to calculate compensation is off - you are offering far under market value.

I have been working at Akebia Therapeutics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Transparency within management and the hard working people.

    Cons

Almost none about the management or work culture. Benefits could improve - Remote work policy restricted, 401k company match way too less (should be minimum at 3 percent , should have an incentive for people who walk or bike to work.

    Advice to Management

    Improve benefits.

    Pros

    Energetic professionals with diverse backgrounds.

    Cons

    Micromanagement
Aggressive/bullying middle management not conducive to team building
    Lack of guidance
    Run in circles
Wastes everyone's time with unnecessary tasks
    Poor communication

    Advice to Management

Great company, but need to focus on end goal, rather than how to get there. There are a very few bad apples who are spoiling the lot. The trick is to identify them and address the issues. Accountability is key.

I have been working at Akebia Therapeutics full-time

    Pros

Growing company offering the opportunity to take on more. Smart, fun co-workers from different places with different experiences. People work hard, care about the work they do, and that patient population that it is for. Interesting area of science with a lot of potential.

    Cons

Going through small company growing pains. Hiring a lot of people. Some processes that worked at 15 people don't work anymore. Communication in larger company is harder as well. Management generally open and willing to look at and discuss issues.

    Advice to Management

Keep focus on what is going well and what needs to be better. More communication across and within teams.

    Pros

Nice new office space and they give you lunch 2 days a weeks. Great if that's what you are looking for.

    Cons

Very top heavy, too many bosses and not enough workers. So lots of delegation, but no real work.
If you have an issue or a problem, don't expect to get any help. People work in silos.
No clear path for future advancement and no really pipeline.

    Advice to Management
