I have been working at Aker Solutions full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great company, but the move we’re currently making to Mobile AL is awful for the business.

    Cons

There’s a ton of them. They offered us next to nil to uproot our families and move to a facility in Alabama that needs millions in improvements to be decent office space.

This company is headed down fast. The leadership in Houston has no sense of direction. Aker does not value their employees outside of Norway. After four years of no raises, we were told we could only get a bump if we moved to Mobile. The majority of people who said they’d move only did it to keep from being laid off and are now leaving the company before their move dates.

The scope of work for everyone has changed since they announced the move, and the only thing we’re pushed to do is cut costs instead of focusing on the customer. Delivery times are constantly pushed to the right and the execution is all but gone. The sheer number of people who have quit makes everyone that’s still here pick up the slack and is overworked and over stressed, and now they’re asking us to stay on past our original layoff dates because we don’t have enough staff left to deliver on time.

If you’re considering a position in Alabama, don’t. The company is moving everything there just to cut costs to be sold off. This is one of the most political companies you’ll ever work for and they’re not set up for success.

To add insult to injury, they cut all the bonuses except for the highest leaders in the company. Everyone that busted their hump to help make the move to Alabama happen recently got told we’d get nothing for going above and beyond while the higher ups are getting paid full bonuses. Thanks for going to bat for us JM.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent. The choice to shut down Houston is going to be the final nail in the coffin of what was once a great company. The whole exercise has been managed from Oslo and it’s obvious our leaders are just puppets without a backbone. While our competitors are reaping the benefits of oil prices going back up, we’re more worried about making sure nobody wants to do business with us because we’re 500 MILES AWAY FROM WHERE OUR CUSTOMERS ARE.

Weak directionally out of Norway. You can not run a us business with a European mentality it is just too different

    Advice to Management

Build an actual US based structure or move on from the US market.

    Pros

Very flexible work environment. Good people to work with. Was paid well. Always heard from others who came to Aker that Aker paid them much better.

    Cons

Upper management keeps reorging the company to "better align with clients and the market" but at the work working level the constant reorganization only leads to disorganization and confusion and an inability to develop team proficiency.
    Also, no training only OJT.

    Advice to Management

Stop reorganizing the company. Also it would be good to provide relevant training and it would also be good to enforce working hours. Fridays are half days, but people only come in to show that they are there with little to no productivity. By 10 AM most are gone. A company cannot be competitive with four working days.

    Pros

Easy environment, used to be a great place to work. Great benefits and very talented people! Loved my job when I worked there for over 20 years.

    Cons

Started layoffs in 2016, but laid off the most experienced and dedicated people without regard of seniority. Nobody could understand the management. All the experience and dedication is gone. Need to fire the management that made such bad decisions. All that is left is the buddy-buddy people!

    Advice to Management

Norway should stay out of America. Go back to being a good company it once was. (TRW Subsea, FSSL. Etc)
