I worked at Akron Beacon Journal part-time for more than a year

      Pros

You do the job that you were hired to do. No hidden agendas or making you do grunt work. Pay was also pretty decent. Coworkers were fantastic and supportive albeit on the older side and less in tune with the current ways of online news.

      Cons

The title says it all. If you get a job here don’t expect to be working for very long before your position is terminated. Saw entire departments get liquidated in favor of outsourcing to third party corporations. It is sad but this seems to be the Beacon’s solution to “adapting”. At some point the only people left are going to be the higher ups while all the other employees are pushed out. Absolutely no chances for moving...

      Advice to Management

Please invest in your employees more and don’t outsource. Hire a younger generation who’s more familiar with the ever changing news world.

I worked at Akron Beacon Journal part-time

      Pros

It's a great place to gain journalism experience in a professional newsroom. It can be exciting to work when big events are going on, like elections or championship sports games. Union keeps wages/vacation/benefits fair, but there aren't a ton of perks like you might see at younger/startup companies. Most people are friendly and pleasant to work with. Overall, it's a great way to gain experience at a real newspaper and...

      Cons

Staff skews older and the paper seems to use a pretty old-fashioned business model and is struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the industry. Low morale due to reduced circulation and layoffs made it draining to go to work. It tends to be understaffed because of the aforementioned layoffs/buyouts, and as a result it can be hard to get days off. Always working nights, weekends, and holidays gets exhausting,...

      Pros

Recent leadership is showing up and taking the lead in this difficult industry. The company has had some rough times and may have the right combination to start making progress. Atmosphere of office morale is on the incline. Management is working on innovative revenue generating plans, and actually talking to the employees about what's going on. That's a great plus, versus how nothing was ever talked about before. There...

      Advice to Management

Management at this time is the best talent that was sorely missing for awhile. Less than a year, and positive action is moving in what we all hope is in the right direction. Keep assessing employees with surveys and reviews and formulate a plan of action based off those assessments, then benchmarks can be reached.

      Advice to Management

Management, from the publisher to VP's. Stop hiring your friends from previous companies, they're doing nothing beneficial. You need to have different personalities with different ideas to help make that place run. If you have friends that think the same as you, then you all stay stagnate with where you're at. Also next year when you go to budget, take a real hard look at what isn't coming back, and goal accordingly....

I worked at Akron Beacon Journal full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

Coworkers are generally pleasant. Long publishing history in the greater Akron area.

      Cons

Lack of direction in an increasingly irrelevant medium. Declining circulation and ad revenue resulting in decreasing pay and benefits for employees. Not exactly a rosy future. Last one out turn out the lights.

      Advice to Management

Allow and reward creative input from employees.

      Pros

Great Company, with great bottom up managing style. Listens and implements great ideas when they are discovered.

      Cons

Industry is dying, print needs to drop the daily in order to stay competitive. No one wants to read yesterdays news today. Stay focused on your audience and you will be successful.

      Advice to Management

Keep open doors, keep positivity and focus on innovation. You have a brand and skill set that will carry you through tough times.
