I worked at Alabama State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Alabama State University has great facilities within their health sciences and some great professors. Alabama State University is easily accessible from the interstate.

    Cons

Alabama State University struggles deeply to finance and support its most outstanding programs. Board members of the university consistently are involved in legal troubles.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to re-evaluate how to finance the university and consider what is most important in preserving longevity of the university as a whole.

I have been working at Alabama State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

One of the benefits of working at this institution is the flexibility of scheduling. I can request certain days and times I want to teach. My supervisor tries to accommodate me.

    Cons

Sometimes we can have a few too many meetings. The committee work and assignments are comparable to other universities in the area, but I'm uncertain if they have as many meetings.

    Advice to Management

Be sure a meeting is absolutely necessary. Some things can be put in a memo.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Alabama State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students are terrific. Costume studio is basement level (as many are!) but it is very well lite, and feels open and spacious. The most of the equipment is about 5 years old, so it's broken in but not broken down. They only produce four shows a year plus a 2-night series of one-acts. Build schedules average 5 weeks on the calendar (reality is different - see "cons"). One or more part-time work study assistants available upon request. Most faculty are very pleasant and professional. For me, it's a very easy job overall.

    Cons

The University is in very serious trouble financially. Money for purchasing and supplies is unbelievably difficult to acquire and ridiculously slow. Real build time is often reduced to three weeks due to delays in funding and subsequent supply acquisition - causing needless stress. It is a very "who you know" institution at nearly every level. Senior faculty members seem to delight in being difficult and often speak in very unprofessional manners. There is a very dysfunctional communication and interpersonal pattern between senior faculty and department management. This unhealthy, chaotic pattern filters out to peers and down to students thereby creating an unnecessarily stressful atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and realistic. Address the problems frankly. Have open and courageous dialogue then take action appropriately. Improve communication and organisation/scheduling.
