I worked at Alameda County Medical Center part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Don't be fooled by the setting, the County pays very well. It also feels great to be helping people.

    Cons

24/7 hours, tough problems, and scheduling by seniority.

    Advice to Management

Look for more flexibility in scheduling. Seniority is outdated in professional positions.

    Pros

Knowing you can make a difference, and that you're on the front lines of the healthcare system transformation in America.

    Cons

A lot of angry, dissatisfied co-workers in a culture that encourages grievance

    Advice to Management

Find a few tiny, achievable things to do to start moving the culture in a more positive direction

I have been working at Alameda County Medical Center part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Electronic Lift Devices in all patients rooms, wonderful coworkers, beautiful setting that is close to terrific shopping areas including a great public library and bird store, knowledgeable, approachable physicians, intensiveists, great respiratory therapy department, good Pt/Ot departments, good shuttle service between hospitals and rapid transit systems, strong union presence.

    Cons

Non user friendly computer system; inflexible, not present nurse manager; parking is a nightmare for pm shift; cafeteria closes early on weekends; limited and geographically inconvenient pharmacy; poor nursing education.

    Advice to Management

    Patients NOT profits come first.

I have been working at Alameda County Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a medical system that includes several clinics, a psychiatric hospital, a rehab hospital, and 3 acute care hospitals including a busy inner city trauma center with a mission to serve all without regard to pay.

    Excellent pension.

Management has trimmed away much of the "dead wood" and is placing Highland Hospital (the trauma center) on a path towards Magnet status.

A chance to work and teach residents as they progress through their residency.

    Cons

The electronic medical record by Siemens - Soarian is horrible.

Not a good place for non-empathetic people.

    Advice to Management

Do more to show that you are concerned with the health of night shift staff. Almost all of the employee wellness offerings are in the daytime. In the same vein, have the cafeteria open most of the night for staff and visitors so they do not have to eat from the junk food sold in the vending machines

I have been working at Alameda County Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The staff is one of the most compassionate group of professionals I've ever worked with and/or lead.

    Cons

Financial departments are not competent to meet the needs of this growing organization.

    Advice to Management

As is in process, continue to bring in the finance and revenue capture professionals to get us back to financial stability.

I worked at Alameda County Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This is a good place to get experience. The patient population is challenging and resources are limited. It was very rewarding to meet and work with persons from across the globe and from all walks of life. Historically the ACMC has positioned itself to treat and care for the indigent and for those with out the ability to pay; thus for persons that by principle believe healthcare is a right and not a privilege they can feel rewarded and purposeful in helping society's most vulnerable.

    Cons

Entrenched bureaucracy, unmotivated and less than qualified persons working in management. Lack of vision that is tenable by persons in leadership positions.

    Advice to Management

The Board of Supervisors should spend some considerable time with ACMC staff, stake holders, and labor organizations to rethink the mission and role of the ACMC otherwise in the changing healthcare game the ACMC may find itself opted out by those persons that can now get plans to larger more integrated health care providers like Kaiser or Sutter.
