I worked at Alameda County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As many know the benefits working within the country are great. Dental is 100% covered by the county and medical through Kaiser is the best Kaiser plan I have had through different employers. There is a lot of opportunity to move around within the county and working within the Internal Audit Unit gives you the exposure to go out and meet leaders of other departments.

    Cons

This unit lost several employees within a short period of time which left the department extremely understaffed with no replacements being hired in an efficient manner. Senior management in this department is not aware when it comes to the ins and outs of conducting audits. Leadership shows up to weekly audit update meetings and talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within to management level roles. Try to promote someone from within who understands simple assignments and tasks. In addition do a better job of screening and interviewing candidates for leadership positions. Don't hire someone who sounds articulate but doesn't understand that Alameda County is not a corporation. In specific departments have high turnover, investigate and understand why.

I have been working at Alameda County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Low stress, multiple promotional opportunities once you get past the TAP monster

    Cons

The TAP monster, which is the Temporary Assignment Pool, where they bring in workers on a temp basis, supposedly not to exceed 18 months. But I know people who have been TAP for 8 years! No benefits!

    Advice to Management

    People need benefits!
