I worked at Alan Wong's Restaurants full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Looks good on resume, opportunity to make impressive contacts and network. Brand holds water, at least within the islands. Hourly staff are fun.

    Cons

Poor compensation, insane hours due to insufficient staffing because of crazy turn over. A lot of lip service, no walking the talk, as they like to say.

    Pros

Really there are no pros here. It's a restaurant setting with ignorant staff and managers. Weak management and staff skills.

    Cons

Management, Staff, Food, not really a go to place, over priced, under served, crap restaurant that has stood for 20+ years. Not really a beneficial place for future reference. Pointless meetings. Waste of time! No work life balance!

    Advice to Management

Look in the mirror! There's a whole world out there!

    Pros

Everyone that worked at Alan Wongs and the Pineapple Room were friendly and hard working. Everyone for the most part pulled their own weight and had fun personalities. The environment is great, because it is a nicer restaurant and so while there are the occasional hard-to-please customers, most of the customers are out for a celebration or are used to higher end dining and aren't unreasonably demanding. The kitchen also takes pride in their work and it isn't very often that customers send back food. You receive a free lunch before the dinner shift, and the food is usually good.

You also start accumulating paid vacation time after a year or so, which I don't believe is not very common for a restaurant. You also get health benefits if you work 20 hours or more.

    Cons

Being a restaurant, there are blackout dates from Thanksgiving through December. This is understandable being a restaurant, but very difficult if you have a close knit family and children. Vacation time was also usually approved, but there would be times when they wouldn't approve the entire length of the vacation that you requested.

    Pros

Great place to learn bout food, wine and service

    Cons

Give up your personal life. The hours are long. Meetings even on days off in addition to minimum 12 hour days

    Advice to Management

Look into better work/life balance for management. The staff are always exhausted, disgruntled and lacking sleep and rest.

    Pros

Always busy so income is good.
    UHA health plan is nice.

    Cons

Management threatens to replace staff quite often, but has trouble hiring qualified replacements.
    Company philosophy isn't held up.
Pay is not as competitive as other restaurants.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff better, offer better compensation and benefits.

    Pros

It looks good on the resume and only good enough for the islands.

    Cons

Inconsistency between staff meals and food served to guests. Too many inconsistencies between managers. Too many kids, no one takes management serously. Too many pointless meetings.
